Elizabeth Warren Stands by DNA Test. But Around Her, Worries Abound.

WASHINGTON — The plan was straightforward: After years of being challenged by President Trump and others about a decades-old claim of Native American ancestry, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts would take a DNA test to prove her stated family origins in the Cherokee and Delaware tribes.

But nearly two months after Ms. Warren released the test results and drew hostile reactions from prominent tribal leaders, the lingering cloud over her likely presidential campaign has only darkened. Conservatives have continued to ridicule her. More worrisome to supporters of Ms. Warren’s presidential ambitions, she has yet to allay criticism from grass-roots progressive groups, liberal political operatives and other potential 2020 allies who complain that she put too much emphasis on the controversial field of racial science — and, in doing so, played into Mr. Trump’s hands.

Advisers close to Ms. Warren say she has privately expressed concern that she may have damaged her relationships to Native American groups and her own standing with progressive activists, particularly those who are racial minorities. Several outside advisers are even more worried: They say they believe a plan should be made to repair that damage, possibly including a strong statement of apology.

The advisers say Ms. Warren will have to confront the issue again if she announces a presidential campaign, which is expected in the coming weeks, and several would like her to act soon.

Publicly, at this point, the senator isn’t second-guessing her actions.

“There have been a lot of thoughtful conversations about this, and I appreciate that,” Ms. Warren said in an interview. “I believe for everyone in public life that transparency is crucial.”

1. Irrelevant

She should tell the Nervous Nellies to stuff it. Once she gets going on the economy which is the issue she knows better than any candidate in both parties this will fade. Take one page from Trump that works rather well; never apologize just because the chorus wants you to. Sounds like she’s on the right track.

2. Here's my advice...

… call Saturday Night Live. Do a skit and laugh it off... get behind some Native American issues. When asked by reporters, say, "I'm proud of my heritage," and offer no more information on the topic. Move on and answer a question you wanted to be asked.

4. Great idea. Humor diffuses criticism.

Maybe have a “young Elizabeth” playing Pocahontas in a middle school play.

3. Why oh why

are we posting b.s. Stories about Sen Warren 's heritage? This was a made up issue by Individual 1 and is way too stupid to be reiterated on a Democratic website. She owes no one an apology. She is an excellent possible candidate. These types of articles falsely try to diminish her qualifications. Plenty of real issues to be discussed here.

And it was a mistake. She played Trumps game. When will he release his tax returns?

26. It wasn't a mistake

If you watch the video it was well done, didn't answer drumpf at all and took in concerns of Native Americans. Some of those groups took the opportunity to criticize her and she is sensitive to that but others of the Native American community have expressed support for her.

14. Why are we posting stories about her heritage?

Because, rather than ignore Trump's taunts, she decided to make it a story. (and no, I don't think President Obama should have responded to the birther issue either).

16. +1000. Contemptible as it is to try to make an issue out of this,

it's just plain stupid to swallow the cynical premise and believe it is.

Those Americans with family stories of some native heritage way back in the past, and of course people of good sense, are not going to sympathize with their new meme that distant heritage is the same as a lie.

I am also wondering that Don Viejo felt we needed more of this anti-Democrat propaganda posted here. Do we need to be re-dosed every month for 4 more years?

17. I agree completely -- She didn't make it an issue, THEY did.

Prior to getting her DNA test done, she was constantly being challenged to do so -- Now that she has, she's getting shit for it. It's a clear case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't".

I understand Repukes taking this low road, but Democrats need to stop the criticism --.It's completely unwarranted.

What else does Sen. Warren have in common with Sec. Clinton? Think, think.

Isn't it nice of the Times to set up an impossible standard it never applies to other public figures then rip a woman for not living up to it?

25. This is such a nothingburger of a story that . . .

the GOP just loves to run with and make it: The Big Issue. On Liz Warren or Hillary Clinton or any other Dem candidate (mostly women) who they clearly find objectionable or a threat or whatever.

My husband had the same family story as Warren's, a narrative that was passed down through several generations. Everyone in the family believed it and frankly with all the details added over the years it sounded plausible. But then, my husband and I had our DNA tested. I was concerned over a marker for Alzheimers (both my father and sister have been victims). Fortunately, my tests showed no markers.

My husband expected a confirmation on the family history/heritage story. Nada. He tested as Northern European and British. Absolutely no sign of Native American DNA.

However, he did score high on Neanderthal links which has become a running joke in the house.

Warren was goaded by the Trumpster's Pocohantas taunts. Maybe she should have ignored the asshole or kept the results to herself. Politically speaking. But in the end, this is something the GOP and media is spinning for their own reasons. All it does is create dissension, something that both entities feed on.

The idea that a 21st-century sovereign nation would expel a racial minority that had been part of it for a century and a half seems outrageous. Yet this is precisely what has happened in the last month in the Cherokee nation, the second largest American Indian tribe. The US government's condemnatory response, however, may cause more problems than it solves.

The Cherokee freedmen are the descendants of African American slaves owned by wealthy Cherokee tribal members. When principal chief Stand Watie became the last confederate general to surrender in the American civil war, a treaty emancipated these slaves and gave them equal rights. The Cherokee nation went further than this in 1866, amending their constitution as follows:

"All native-born Cherokees, all Indians and whites legally members of the nation by adoption and all freedmen who have been liberated by voluntary act of their former owners or by law […] shall be taken and deemed to be citizens of the Cherokee nation."
But more than a century later, chiefs Ross Swimmer and Wilma Mankiller created a new requirement that all Cherokee should hold a certificate of degree of Indian blood.

Can't help but feel like it is not an accident that three major news outlets all attack her over this NONSENSE on the same day. It is so fucking frustrating how Democrats are expected to be absolutely FLAWLESS in every way or they are relentlessly attacked.

Meanwhile drumpf still has NOT donated the million dollars to charity he promised to and the story here is "Warren was right, but she wasn't right ENOUGH so it doesn't count."
