Man unleashes pit bull on bride at wedding reception and also beats the bride with brass knuckles

DENVER -- Denver police are searching for a man accused of unleashing a pit bull mix on a bride at her wedding reception and then beating her with brass knuckles.

"The whole time he just stood there and laughed," the 22-year-old bride, Brittany Cortez, said of her alleged attacker, Joel Nevarez, a troubled childhood friend.

"He let that dog drag me around the street like a rag doll," the bride said. "He punched me in the face and the back of the head with brass knuckles."

Friends and Nevarez's family members said they live in terror of the 31-year-old man, who they said has become increasingly unstable and aggressive.

Sorry for her pain but she didn't seem to put a lot of thought into who she wanted to marry.

Did you read the article? The attacker was a guest at the wedding.

Why didn't someone alert the authorities about this unstable person? What if he had bought a gun?

no need to. If you wanna gripe at the NRA, go ahead - there are plenty of things to gripe about - especially with their political arm. But don't just make dumb shit up to complain about.

How did this out of control guy even make the dog do that? And his family has been living in fear of him, just horrible. It shows how badly we need an upgrade in our mental health system.

then I gotta be fair - nowhere in the OP was it suggested that guns would have helped or hurt. This wasn't about guns at all.

It was about a mental patient and convicted criminal who lost it and beat a girl with brass knuckles and sicced his dog on her.

the only mention of guns at all in the article was a note that the perpetrator's own sister sleeps with a gun near her bed because she is afraid of him.

I took your post to mean that banning guns would not have helped out in this situation.

But banning guns was never even suggested by OP in this thread.

I took issue with uponit for inventing an imaginary NRA stance on giving weapons to a mentally unstable criminal and I took issue with you for inventing a gun ban that was not there.

Tell me where I mistook you please.

Who seem to hold the unrealistic view that banning guns (as if it were possible) would prevent crazy nuts from committing violent acts (it won't, since they'll use whatever other weapons they can obtain). The far better, and more practical, solution is to get crazy nuts the mental health care they need, and to keep criminals who use guns locked up where they can neither obtain a gun or commit a crime. Although violent gun crime is dropping, this will drop it further.
In the OP, getting the guy mental help would have prevented the crime. Banning guns would not have.

It was exactly what I thought it was. I simply disagree that this thread was the place to make that point.

And I think it is a valid point but this thread had nothing to do with guns so there was no real need to bring guns into it.

Getting an attacking dog off of somebody is difficult and then she no doubt needed medical attention.

Getting the assailant should come after making sure the victim is okay.

I have a brother who is 9 years older than I. When I was 9 he moved away to college.

Sure, when I was 5 he was 14 but that isn't quite friendship material. He was my babysitter.

If this guy was 20 years old and hanging around with an 11 year old girl he should have been arrested then.

People ready to go off and try to kill others for the slightest of reasons. And it seems to be daily news. Hell, it's almost daily local news.

And it seems to be spreading.

WTF is going on?

What should they do with the guy when they find him?

What would be fair punishment?
