But he was no hero.
Hey America, if you're looking for a hero look in the mirror. There is all the hero you need.

14. I am the descendant of five uncles and a father who fought in WWII. They AND GHWBush WERE heroes.

I won't allow their service or that of any other WWII veteran to be disparaged. I know the price many or most of them paid and many could never even bring themselves to speak of it throughout the rest of their lives.

NO.

than to accuse all who served in WWII as being "murderers". Good gawd.

25. Blinders keep people in darkness to events beyond their narrow view.

No one here was disparaging his military service. Just his corruption, racism, and obstruction of Justice once in power. A uniform does not give one carte blanch to ignore laws or cause others to suffer by treachery.

26. Goodybye. Those who accuse those who fought for our country whether D's or R's) of being "murderers"

as the other poster certainly did on this thread are either intentionally disrupting (?) or very very very wrong/deluded.
And, your post down thread comparing GHW Bush to Hitler was certainly no better.

35. My Father,an Engineer

Who built bridges, across Europe, My Husband, who went in on Omaha Beach, was wounded, 2 Uncles, 3 Bil’s, all served.

President Bush was a hero. Pulled out of the ocean.

I did not agree with his Politics, but, like John McCain, they served their Country.

It is offensive, because you disagree with later actions to say they were not a hero. They were!

I get the animus people have because of his policies and campaign tactics which were truly awful. But unless you can honestly say you’d be willing to strap yourself into an airplane and get shot at fighting the Empire of Japan, or the fascists in Europe, shut up about his military service.

41. Someone who has seen war first hand but engages in lies and deceit to start a war

isn't a hero. A far cry above the current dipshit in office, but not a hero. Someone who has seen war first hand but sends April Glaspie to tell Saddam Hussein that the US didn't really care if he invaded Kuwait, then hired PR firms to publish fake stories about taking babies out of incubators to justify a war isn't a hero.

....Duane Clarridge, Alan Fiers, Clair George.
All were convicted of several counts of perjury in relation
to the Iran-Contra affair (crime) and were pardoned by Pres.
George H.W. Bush. He professed to "out of the loop" during
the time that Ronald Reagan said "mistakes were made".

You can have been a hero, no question, and GHWB WAS a war hero. That doesn't mean the rest of your life was always lived in an exemplory manner. He was guilty of some deplorable actions as well.

30. I think he was a hero.

And as the saying goes, freedom isn't free. Many have served and died in our military so that you can live free even if you don't understand it doesn't come to you for free . The price was/is high, paid for in blood among the ways. Even if you don't know or understand the price paid by choice or some sort of short coming ,that's ok too. It is customary to set grievances aside at ones passing. I would further go on to say George H. W. Bush was a man of the people and for the people. He did the right thing, they raised tax's. And there was price to pay there too.

31. Man flew 58 combat missions off an aircraft carrier

In an underpowered, easily brought down plane.

While his later actions deserved censure, there is no denying that in his youth he was a hero.

My uncle had a friend when I was young. Was in the Big Red 1. Three beach invasions, 2 Purple Hearts(shot both times), bronze star.

Biggest racist, bully I have ever know. Total all around asshole. Despite that, he was a hero.

32. Dear hlthe2b

As someone who served and coming from a military family where all but one served, I appreciated your post. Whereas I was not a fan of President GHWB, I respected Lieutenant GHWB and his military service, beginning with the fact that he enlisted straight out of school. As the son of privilege and wealth, he could easily have opted for a safer path and a more comfortable future. But he chose to serve. And he served his nation with courage.

In the NAVY, we have an saying: "Since 1775, there are no ex-sailors. Our title is earned, never given, and what's earned is ours forever."

It has been my observation recently, that (some of) the newest generations of DUers have a very different agenda than us older folks, and I am saddened by the harsh comments that I see lately.

34. It's one of the reasons I think we should have universal service.

Two years post high school. Whichever service organization would suit.
Something to manifest civic duty and give a heads up to what being a citizen might entail.

40. Why?

Shouldn't citizens give something to their country besides taxes?

I never served since I was in the generation who came of age just after Viet Nam. It's something I've thought about many times. Service to our country could bring a more unified population.

Or do you think we are a nation of individuals without a commonality?

I'm curious and thanks for your considered response.
