The chief lawyer for the state Senate Republicans was fired Monday after admitting that he removed tens of thousands of dollars without authorization from the Senate Republican campaign fund.
Michael J. Cronin informed me that as sole signatory of the Senate Republican Leadership PAC, he removed without authorization tens of thousands of dollars from the caucus PAC monies that were donated to support state Senate candidates, Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Len Fasano said. Upon learning this information, the Senate Republican Office immediately terminated Attorney Cronin.
Fasano told reporters Monday that Cronin, a trusted aide, admitted taking the money without authorization in a meeting with him Monday morning in New Haven. Fasano said the precise amount was unclear, pending a forensic audit that would determine exactly which bills remained unpaid for campaign expenses that included polling, telephone banks and advertisements.
After meeting with Cronin in New Haven, Fasano said he checked to confirm that Cronin had called the states top prosecutor, Chief States Attorney Kevin Kane, to report the missing money. Cronin also hired noted criminal defense attorney Ross Garber to defend him in the case.
