1. It is clear that GHWB and to a much lesser extent even

GWB had ethical boundaries that they would not cross. GHWB was on the right side of racial issues and risked his congressional seat to vote for the Civil Rights Act. GWB refused to bow to pressure from evangelical advisors to bash gays during his campaigns. That doesn't mean that either of them were particularly moral men, but they were not 100% evil.

3. Comparatively, yes. There is alot to criticize him for & I won't, but, he was one of the better R's

Carter has been demonized his entire post-WH life for his Presidency. I'd dearly hope he would be reassessed (as has Bush I) as his remaining years wane.

4. Lee Atwater was a problem

But in terms of governance he did what he felt was in the national interest and wasn’t very political at all, especially compared with his R successors.

7. He was a horrible president.

He was sandwiched in between two distinctly more horrible Republican presidents, Reagan and his dimwit son, so he doesn’t seem quite so bad, but please stop propagating the nonsense that the right wing horror show that started with Nixon and Reagan and continued through the two horrid Bushs, is not what got us to Trump. It was inevitable. They all have blood on their hands.

10. He pardoned all the Iran-contra traitors. Conservative crooks getting away with their crimes

directly led to W and Trumpy.

HW Bush and Reagan also put Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden on the US payroll.

Crappy President.

15. +1000

Can't believe I'm reading this stuff on DU.

The BFEE and its LONG history of criminal activity was daily conversation on DU for the first 8 years of its existence.

WTF happened?

8. I have to disagree with you about just one thing. I think Carter and Bush will both get the

credit they deserve and also the knocks. It's a good thing severe and blinded partisans don't write history.

Also if I were you I would just IGNORE the partisans who are blinded by hatred. Have a great day !!!

9. Bush was the "compassionate conservative "

But in his ambition he continued policies were supply side until even he could see the damage and moderated a bit. His surrogates such as Lee Atwater were race-baiters. Perhaps I am mistaken, but I don't recall him calling them out. Like many, I think his desire to be president blinded him to the hard right wing that has ascended within the GOP

11. Clarence Thomas.

An insult to black people everywhere.

The Willie Horton ads. Willingness to pander to dog-whistle racism.

14. Those are two biggies

We can't forget the lies used to justify the first Iraq war.
I also can't forget how he switch positions on issues just so he could become the VP. Abortion was one as I recall.
And the only reason he said the whole "read my lips" thing, was because Mondale admitted right up front that taxes needed to be increased. Bush "knew" there was a serious problem with revenues and he knew that cutting costs alone wouldn't accomplish it.
I will say, I always thought there should be a prohibition on CIA directors becoming presidents.

He was far from the worst, but he was far from the best as well. The last few days have become unbearable because they are quickly trying to make the guy into a saint just because he wasn't as bad as Trump.
