Obama Mourns "Humble Servant" George H.W. Bush

Via press release from former President Barack Obama:

America has lost a patriot and humble servant in George Herbert Walker Bush. While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude. Not merely for the years he spent as our forty-first President, but for the more than 70 years he spent in devoted service to the country he loved – from a decorated Naval aviator who nearly gave his life in World War II, to Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces, with plenty of posts along the way. Ambassador to the United Nations. Director of Central Intelligence. U.S. Envoy to China. Vice President of the United States.

George H.W. Bush’s life is a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling. And he did tremendous good along the journey. Expanding America’s promise to new immigrants and people with disabilities. Reducing the scourge of nuclear weapons and building a broad international coalition to expel a dictator from Kuwait. And when democratic revolutions bloomed across Eastern Europe, it was his steady, diplomatic hand that made possible an achievement once thought anything but – ending the Cold War without firing a shot.

6. Your premise would be stronger

Had Bush not lost re-election for raising taxes, including on the rich.

And I never can understand blaming a man for his father in laws actions. But he gets it a lot here.

Don’t like the guys politics. But neither did the bat shit crazy wing of the Republican Party. They never forgave his truthful statement when he called Reagan’s Supply Side economics ‘Voodoo Economics’.

He also signed the ADA into law and despised the religious right.

If the republicans in power today were like him then we would be in normal political times arguing about and trying to convince Americans we have a better vision for the nation.

Where now we are literally fighting to save our liberal democracy.

7. I agree with your premise, he was a relatively good Republican and we could use

his type now. I accept your points in favor of H Bush. I often make the similar argument here at DU we need more respect for the Morning Joe types who provide stable, useful help in these troubled times.

However, he ushered dumya into the Presidency. Nixon the crook, had it right when he said of H Bush, [former head of RNC, CIA], prescient as Reagan's VP for dirty work, 'Bush knows how to keep his mouth shut'!
