Big Latino Turnout In Midterms Raises Stakes For 2020

Election after election, pundits predict that Latinos will be a powerful voting bloc. And Latino voters consistently underperform those expectations by failing to turn out at the polls in big numbers.

But this year's midterm results in Nevada, Arizona and other states suggest that Latino turnout is up dramatically a development that could reshape the electoral landscape for 2020 and beyond.

In Texas, turnout rose dramatically in heavily Latino precincts across the state from the Rio Grande Valley, to big cities like El Paso and San Antonio.

As she walked into the voting booth in Houston, college student Chelsea Linares said she was thinking about her parents, who immigrated to Texas from Honduras before she was born.

1. We are still underperforming among Latinos In TX and FL

We need to begin outreach for 2020 now.

2. would a Latino candidate

drive up turnout like Obama did with the African American vote? I think in 2008, African American turnout percentages was higher than white turnout.

3. Maybe, but I think working in their communities is the big thing

Scott courted Latinos, reached out early, and visited PR. Obama wasn't just about skin color, he was exciting.

4. One issue is needing to deal with the fact that there are multiple ethnic groups

who are "Hispanic" and each has different needs/focuses. This means distinguishing the Central and South American Hispanics from the Caribbean Hispanics. These communities need kin to do outreach that is tailor-made.

7. Yes, it's a complex group, and we shouldn't assume they all want the same things

just because they share a language.

8. You are exactly right.

Assuming all Hispanic (whatever that is) or Latin American (yup whatever that is) people are the same is to make a huge mistake in demographics. It would be like saying everyone who speaks English is British. The euphemistic 'brown people' needs to go as well.

5. We should really implement A $10 voter tax credit.

I bet this will boost participation among poorer people

Not my idea . I stole it from the response to my thread on this topic
