Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Thursday insisted that he had paid more than 13 percent of his income in taxes over the last 10 years, and accused the people who want to see his returns of being "small minded."
During a press conference at the airport in Greer, South Carolina, the GOP hopeful told reporters that he couldn't understand why people keep asking about his taxes.
"I just have to say, given the challenges that America faces -- 23 million people out of work, Iran about to become nuclear, one out of six Americans in poverty -- the fascination with taxes I paid I find to be very small minded compared to the broad issues that we face," Romney explained.
"But I did go back and look at my taxes and over the past 10 years, I never paid less than 13 percent," he continued. "I think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that. So, I pay taxes every single year."
Romney added that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-NV) assertion that he had not paid any taxes over 10 years was "totally false."

(21,925 posts)As President, he would be proposing tax policy. I want to know if he's seeking the Presidency for the purpose of self-enrichment. The only way we can know that is to see where his money has been coming from and what taxes he's paid in the past. If he were President, every time he signed a tax bill into law I'd be asking whether it served to increase his fortune and if it involved him in a conflict between his own financial interest and the interest of the American people. How is this not a relevant issue?
I can't believe some of the things coming of out Romney's mouth.
We're supposed to just hand you the keys without knowing squat about you? Seriously.

Bye-bye "small minded" undecided voters. Romney doesn't need the likes of you.

The more the Romney's open their mouths on this issue, the worse it gets for them.

(5,818 posts)on ALL sources of income. State income taxes, property taxes, gift taxes, sales taxes, Medicare taxes, gasoline taxes, etc easily could top 13 percent of his wage income from speaking fees.
The question should be, what were
--his Form 1040 Adjusted Gross Income,
--his Form 1040 Total Income,
--his Form 1040 Total Federal Income Tax,
--his total Federal Carried Interest,
--the income tax he paid to each US state or locality, and the identities of all those states and localities, and
--the total value of all his IRAs,
each year from 1985 (the earliest of the 23 years for which he gave fideral income tax returns to John McCain in 2008) to 2011?
I am surprised such information is not required already on the financial disclosure every candidate for federal office must file with the FEC.
