Nancy Pelosi doesn't currently have the votes to be speaker

Here are the 17 House Democrats who oppose Nancy Pelosi for speaker of the House.

By Ella [email protected] Nov 15, 2018, 1:05pm EST

A total of 17 Democrats have signed a letter signaling their opposition to Pelosi, the intent of which is to demonstrate she doesn’t have the 218 votes to be speaker and encourage another person to challenge her. But when that letter will be released is still an open question.

The names, first obtained by the Huffington Post’s Matt Fuller, include:

Tim Ryan (D-OH)

Seth Moulton (D-MA)

Kathleen Rice (D-NY)

Ed Perlmutter (D-CO)

Kurt Schrader (D-OR)

Filemon Vela Jr. (D-TX)

Stephen Lynch (D-MA)

Marcia Fudge (D-OH)

Bill Foster (D-IL)

Brian Higgins (D-NY)

Linda Sanchez (D-CA)

Jim Cooper (D-TN)

Rep.-elect Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ)

Rep.-elect Joe Cunningham (D-SC)

Rep.-elect Max Rose (D-NY)

Rep.-elect Anthony Brindisi (D-NY)

Ben McAdams, the Democrat running against Rep. Mia Love (R-UT) in Utah has also signed, but he has not secured a win in his congressional race.

And there are other committed no’s who aren’t on the letter. Newly elected members Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), Jason Crow (D-CO), Haley Stevens (D-MI), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), and Conor Lamb (D-PA) have not yet signed the letter but have publicly committed to vote against Pelosi on the all-important January 3 floor vote.

A potential Pelosi challenger is emerging

This isn’t the end of Pelosi’s problems. Fudge, a former chair of the powerful Congressional Black Caucus, is reportedly considering her own speaker bid. The Ohio Congress member hasn’t yet made a decision, she told a local paper.

“People are asking me to do it, and I am thinking about it,” Fudge told cCeveland.com’s Sabrina Eaton. “I need to give it some thought and see if I have an interest. I am at the very beginning of this process. It is just in discussion at this point.”

The hatred and contempt aimed at Nancy Pelosi rivals that hurled at DWS... so I wonder... are people confused? Do they think she's the same person?

Democrats should be wary of throwing away one of the most disciplined speakers in recent memory. Pick a speaker who is over their head and the House turns into a shit storm fast.

One more thing: Republicans ran against Pelosi this year and had their worst loss since Watergate.

shooting ourselves in the foot after a spectacular electoral success is not a winning position. We're at a critical juncture in this country and Democrats will be tap dancing on a knife edge to balance oversight responsibilities and getting shit done for the American public. We need to do both and we need a seasoned Captain to navigate the rough seas ahead. Throwing Nancy Pelosi overboard now is reckless and downright insane.

You know who likes this idea? Republicans and members of the press.

Please, let's not take the bait, again. The Five Guy gang needs to stand down and stop beating the drum for a mass suicide event.

I'm all for Pelosi shepherding and mentoring these newbie representatives for leadership roles and handing off the baton in 2020. That will part of her legacy.

But for now, we need Nancy Pelosi's skill for wending through the legislative labyrinth so that we can win the WH in 2020 and bring back sanity to the world.

We need Nancy Pelosi more than ever.

Anyone not supporting Nancy will vote for Marcia Fudge, assuming she’s in the running for Speaker. Everyone else will vote for Nancy.

Then what? Then what will they do on this hopeless task?

Once the caucus has chosen it's nominee everyone will support her.

Has a single Democrat said they will vote with Republicans for their nominee or vote in ca way to allow the Republicans to take the Speakership?

They can vote for someone else in caucus, but once Pelosi win and it is her versus MCarthy for speaker, democrats will be committing suicide not to vote for, newly elected or not. If people like Spanberger and others do not vote for her on the floor, they might as well resign immediately because they have lost their seat in Congress.

Simple majority in caucus to nominate her to run for speaker against McCarthy. Any Dem that vote for McCarthy just as well should resign or change parties, they have lost their seat as a Dem.

they will never get elected again.

There is a real danger there they are playing around with, but their insurrection will not work. There are way more Dems backing Pelosi than there are claiming they have the numbers to block her.
