Some of these proclamations are fear based IMO. Fear he might beat the preferred candidates of those who are really invested in him not running. From my perspective the more the merrier.

I think he should be a Senator first, and then run. The way Obama did it.

He's young and he needs to build a foundation.

We can wait.

The point was that if elected, he would serve out his term not spend most of it running for another office.

I have an "insider" friend who has been telling me for months now that many big wig Dems were ready to court him for 2020 if he lost.

That's what he said 1 day before the election, so I was wrong about it being after the election. But I'm sure he'd say the same thing now.

https://kfoxtv.com/news/local/beto-orourke-says-he-will-not-run-for-president-in-2020

And this is what he said about a week before the election:

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) addressed rumors that he might be eyeing a presidential run in 2020, saying, “It’s a definitive no.”

“The answer is no,” he said during a town hall in McAllen, Texas on Thursday evening. “Our children are 11, they’re 10, and they’re 7 years old. We’ve told them we’re going to take these almost two years out of our life to run this race, and then we’re devoted and committed to being a family again.”

I learned my lesson back when I said it was too soon for Obama.

From Beto's thank-you email to his supporters:

Just know that I want to be part of the best way forward for this country -- whatever way I can help in whatever form that takes. Know that I am honored to have run this campaign with you and that I want to continue to honor and be honest to what was powerful about it.

For the time being, I am going to focus on being a better dad to our kids who have not had much of one for the last 22 months.

He may or may not run, but only those hopelessly naive or political neophytes would take such a proclamation right before an election as the final word on the subject.

He may not run but he certainly would be a qualified candidate based on several factors and I think would have a good chance to win and be a great President. So there.

He would lose to Cornyn by wider margin and the luster would be gone...probably never to return.

This fear of Beto running for president reminds me of the Trump/Scott fear of counting votes
