A turnover win in NM. A LITTLE (SMALL) EGG ON NATIONAL MEDIA'S FACE

Torres Small pulls off upset in 2nd Congressional District race

Joshua Panas, Patrick Hayes
November 07, 2018 10:12 PM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In a stunning turn of events, Democrat Xochitl Torres Small, 33, has been declared the winner of New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District race.

"The votes have been counted and voices of people in New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District have been heard," Torres Small said to a small group of supporters in Las Cruces after learning she beat Republican Yvette Herrell.

The secretary of state's office said it still has 100 ballots that need to be hand tallied along with approximately 1,000 provisional ballots. However, even if Herrell was to get the majority of those votes, it would not be enough for her to catch Torres Small.
https://www.kob.com/new-mexico-news/xochitl-torres-small-takes-lead-in-2nd-congressional-district-race/5137351/

Herrell claimed victory Tuesday night; and national media agreed she had won; but we have paper ballots in New Mexico, instead of Diebold Machines, like most Republican states and we count every one of them.

Absentee votes had not been counted, or announced until now. I first heard it on a local rock station (102.5 FM) Coyote; and I could not find it online from larger media sources,at 7:00 AM, MTZ, 11/8/18. Our local TV station confirmed the results, online!

Torres Small is apparent winner in 2nd District
Source: Albuquerque Journal

LAS CRUCES – Democrat Xochitl Torres Small is the new projected winner over Republican Yvette Herrell in the hotly contested race for southern New Mexico’s congressional seat following a hand count of 8,000 absentee ballots in Doña Ana County on Wednesday. She is the first woman and Latina to represent the state’s second Congressional District. Torres Small’s apparent victory means Democrats make up New Mexico’s entire congressional delegation – both senators and all three members of the U.S. House.

5. The media had its narrative of no Blue Wave

But here we are a couple days later and seemingly 90% of the late breaking races are going the Dems way, even for ones that were called for Reps.

This absolutely was a blue wave, the media was looking for an excuse to belittle it.

And this could work for Dems. By downplaying the blue wave, the Dem takeover across the country will be down played and we'll have 2020 to build towards. 2020 starts now.

considering the gerrymandered districts.

7 million more people voted for Democrats in House elections.

More people also voted Democratic in the Senate elections.

That was the overall number. I forget which talking head it was. But they pointed out that this was a progression from the three million more votes that Hillary got. This time, though, that large an advantage really paid off.

17. I'm a New Mexico voter and very happy!

I’m not in soon-to-be-Rep. Small’s district, but it’s great that the State is such a deep shade of blue.

On a related topic, I couldn’t stand to watch the televised returns. My network of choice probably would have been MSNBC. The thought of Steve Kornacki hopping around like a chimp on crack and the talking heads (other than Rachel) creating ”trends” and interpreting voters’ messages that couldn’t be detected as returns came in, discouraged me. And I think 2016 traumatized me as well. I read a book and every so often I checked the Daily Kos live blog.

My other home, where my husband still votes, is in Thousand Oaks, CA, scene of last night’s shooting. Our home there is in Rep. Julia Brownley’s district, CA-26. As expected, she roundly beat Trumpster and underwear model Antonio Sabato. I was awaiting results of the Steve Knight-Katie Hill race in neighboring Simi Valley, which was one of the races highlighted nationally. After watching the close returns Tuesday, I was thrilled Katie Hill was declared the winner finally last night.

The MSM coverage leaves a lot to be desired. Fair elections require all votes be counted. That takes more time than tv wants it to take. The results can be exciting, but the process isn’t. I prefer full fair voting and vote counts. I wish the circus atmosphere would end.

I also wish there was a place that kept a running tally of how many Dem House seats have been won. Kos ran that election night, but now that’s been taken down. It would be nice to have a live count of how many we flipped and how large a majority Pelosi will have.

25. SOOOOOO glad Steve Knight has been flipped OUT!

At least three different Democratic groups or clubs of which I was a member - had sub-groups that were working like crazy to flip that district. It’s really gratifying to see how all that hard work paid off! They were at it from the get-go - as soon as those seven districts were targeted for potential flipping. Every weekend there was some carpool or group of people heading up the 405 to parts north - to register voters and talk up the idea of replacing him.

The work of the saints, for sure!

59. 538 has an article dated yesterday afternoon with the major races

that haven't been called yet.

"As of 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, news outlets have yet to project winners in 18 races: three for the U.S. Senate, 14 for the U.S. House and one for Georgia governor. These races have the potential to meaningfully change the narrative around this election — for example, Democrats could pick up 42 House seats instead of 29, or turn a disappointing showing in the Senate into a draw. Here’s the state of each undecided race — including our best estimate on who might prevail when all is said and done."

There was Debbie Downer, James Carville, on MSNBC announcing 'NO Blue Wave' rather early on in the evening! I turned it off because of 2016 PTSD, but did turn it back on about a half hour later when House seats started to flip.

I remain extremely disappointed in the lack of coverage regarding voter suppression in GA and elsewhere on election day particularly on MSNBC. Where else would it be covered.

36. Welcome to DU, justie18.

It's tremendously frustrating to me, too, but I'm a partisan, and not the trying-hard-to-be-neutral journalist I used to have to be. One advantage of having retired from that kind of work. I can freely voice opinions now!

But I have to admit - sometimes the effort to be GENUINELY "fair and balanced" seems somewhat stupid to me now. Especially when there's one network out there that's CRAVENLY partisan, so much so that its "stars" are now PHYSICALLY out there at rallies, actively and brazenly cheerleading trump. They really should refine their slogan. "Fair and Balanced (to ONE SIDE ONLY)".

Seems to me, in the interest of TRUE and GENUINE "fairness" and "balance" maybe we NEED some outfit like MSNBC to push back - and be open about it. To counter-act the wrong-wing thrust of Pox Noise.
