Missouri shipwreck resurfaces because of drought

(CNN) - The wooden steamboat Montana has resurfaced on the Missouri River, thanks to the severe drought.

Pieces of the sunken vessel are now clearly visible in Bridgeton, Mo., because of the near-record low water levels.

The Montana, built in 1882, was the largest vessel to ever travel the Missouri -- longer than a football field.

Well, at least one cool thing came from the drought. The rest has been sheer hell for us!

2. This last week has been the most comfortable we've had in Missouri

nearly all summer. We've had so many 100+ temp days I've lost track. My garden died, my lawn is straw, and I'm dreading what groceries will be come this fall.

Advice for you: stock up on flour and such now, before the prices go up. They will go up this fall-wheat, corn, soy bean fields were scorched this summer.

garden is toast. We kept our pathetic little tomatoes and peppers alive with the garden hose, but the grass seed we planted is on its own. (It's not that Maine is entirely lacking rain, but we go for far too many days between, and our clay-heavy dirt is so baked the water just runs down the hill.)

4. We had no rain for weeks.

The rain we've recently had cannot make up for what we've lost. It's been stated on our local news that we would need to receive an inch a day for several weeks to make up for what we've missed out on.

And the groceries would include things like cereal, cake mixes, even pasta, depending on the type. Just make a list of your dry goods and look for anything with corn, wheat, or soy. I don't know about dried beans but it might be worth looking in to. I don't know how well they've done so far but I'd think not all that well.

miles from here, but not much here. Still, it's not bad enough that anyone is talking about rationing water like the last time we had a sever drought.

Cereal. Man, do my kids blow through a ton of that stuff! It's breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dessert in their book.

each shopping trip for a few weeks. Think about it-grain product, even the heavily sugared stuff. And we go through it like crazy.

We just haven't had enough rain here and we had less than half an inch of snow in my town last winter-just not a good combination.

another ship that sank in the Missouri River, check out this site: http://www.1856.com/

I used to live in the Kansas City area and went there several times. It is, in my opinion, simply the very best museum I have ever been to.

It really is cool.
