And nothing to see here, just a member of Brasil's Congress encouraging students to rat out any professors complaining about Bolsonaro's election:

Had a very good conversation with the newly elected President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who won his race by a substantial margin. We agreed that Brazil and the United States will work closely together on Trade, Military and everything else! Excellent call, wished him congrats!

(11,726 posts)You hear the term "Cultural Marxism" discussed a great deal in White Supremacist circles. Cultural Marxism, Cultural Bolshevism, and Internationalism are all terms that those groups use to discuss the influence of Jews on the world (obviously not in a good way).
Jordan Peterson, the idiot Canadian psychologist who is a darling of the right, has been throwing the terms around a lot in his speeches on how Hitler wasn't really about White Supremacy, but just a guy with OCD who needed to eradicate "filth". He talks about Cultural NeoMarxism and how "the West" is under attack. Marx was German, isn't Germany "the West"?

(9,895 posts)The mid-terms are going to be challenged and the validity of the vote questioned in a dry run for 2020. There is no doubt in my mind that Trump has no intention of EVER leaving office...he plans to die in office and leave the government to Ivanka...about the only part of his plan I can abide is the die in office part if he means today or tomorrow only.
Shit's about to get real for a lot of people real soon now...predicted test cases? Texas senate. Georgia governor. North Dakota senate. Hope I am wrong, but I got a real bad feeling about this...

Fascism doesnt arise suddenly in an existing democracy. It is not easy to get people to give up their ideas of freedom and civility. You have to do trial runs that, if they are done well, serve two purposes. They get people used to something they may initially recoil from; and they allow you to refine and calibrate. This is what is happening now and we would be fools not to see it.
One of the basic tools of fascism is the rigging of elections weve seen that trialled in the election of Trump, in the Brexit referendum and (less successfully) in the French presidential elections. Another is the generation of tribal identities, the division of society into mutually exclusive polarities. Fascism does not need a majority it typically comes to power with about 40 per cent support and then uses control and intimidation to consolidate that power. So it doesnt matter if most people hate you, as long as your 40 per cent is fanatically committed. Thats been tested out too. And fascism of course needs a propaganda machine so effective that it creates for its followers a universe of alternative facts impervious to unwanted realities. Again, the testing for this is very far advanced.
His numbers have been steady upper 30's, low 40's. He is emboldened. No one has stopped him. His cult is emboldened. I see even more violence after November, no matter who wins the House. They are poor winners & even worse losers. I'd bet money that there will be a Constitutional crisis after the election. We are on a precipice & could topple either way.

(36,424 posts)The only explanation I have is that people are scared. As a collective, we see what's coming, in spite of the deniers. Climate change is going to change everything forever. Wait until the southern regions of the US becomes uninhabitable & we have our own citizens migrating north. It won't matter if they're white, then. It's gonna get ugly.

(31,261 posts)People hate to believe that their choices are the blame for their problems. They want to blame someone else, immigrants taking their jobs (patently untrue), racial minorities getting special favors, women demanding equal treatment.
Fascists point the finger at the invisible boogieman and scared voters jump up and down saying yes.
Expect an late seventies and early eighties wave of immigrants out of Brazil heading for saner places. Brazil will go down faster than Venezuela because it does not have the large oil reserves.

America better hope that we on the left never get to the point the right has been for 40 frickin years, but how much are we supposed to take?

(10,749 posts)Listening to Hitler's Compromises by Nathan Stoltzfus. Just a couple of chapters in. Interesting perspective on Hitler's administration/management of the development of the Third Reich, and the dance toward the Final Solution. I think we're seeing parallels today in the rise of the far right in Europe, the US, and now South America. Will we see a truly genocidal regime evolve today? I don't think so, but I no longer rule anything out.

(4,980 posts)I reworked my schedule for the week so I can represent liberals at a seniors luncheon I attend with my grandma every week. I will wear a Beto shirt to let the 85% republican crowd know exactly how I voted. While they mostly know I'm a democrat, I intend to make it more pronounced this week. I'd like them to truly see me as the liberal they more than tolerate. They like to see my shining face as much as I like to see theirs. Fortunately, my Granny voted all democrat, and I expect she'll approve of my t-shirt.
Basically, I'm not taking this facism acceptance crap lying down... I'm gonna wear democrat t-shirts everyday this week, heck I might dye my hair black and brown tomorrow. Won't be new to me, but it will be new to the conservatives I see every week. Just so they have to question whom won't conform if Trump goes full Brazilian.

That's why we know almost nothing at all about the people who populated the Americas prior to the brutal invasions.
