One Week Out from Victory: A Blue Tsunami

By Bernard Weiner

As with many of my aging cohort — veteran activists from the civil rights/anti-war Movement in The Sixties (Vietnam) and post-9/11 era (Iraq) — physical issues have kept me away from walking precincts to knock on doors for these midterms. But my checkbook is alive and well enough to help donate to numerous fine candidates and social-justice organizations, and my political brain still is capable of rational analysis of our country’s dangerous, racist, reckless leaders.

So here are some quick summations one week out from Election Day. See if these observations resonate with your own thinking.

1. Those of us who were warning for years about creeping authoritarianism and signs of incipient fascism in our politics are being taken more seriously these days in the wake of extreme rightist action: pipe-bombs, militia violence, assassination scenarios, running down protestors with cars, calls for mass-murdering of political “enemies”, cops shooting unarmed African-American citizens, street-gang thugs beating up ideological opponents on city sidewalks, anti-semitic massacres, and loud and constant denunciations of media outlets as (Stalin’s term) “enemies of the people.” Eerily reminiscent of Germany’s warring ideological street gangs prior to Nazi domination in the 1930s.

2. You can tell how jittery Trump and his Congressional minions are pre-Election Day by their overtly desperate, last-minute policy announcements: their 180-degree turn from promising to eliminate the pre-existing-conditions mandate in the Affordable Care Act to pretending they now are the defenders of pre-existing conditions and other aspects of Obamacare; or Trump’s out-of-nowhere, totally fictitious 10% tax cut for the middle-class. How stupid do they think American voters are not to notice the snake-oil being peddled by the carnival barkers in the White House and Congress? Wait, don’t answer that.

3. As I write this, GOP dirty-tricks cadres are in full swing in many states — the most egregious being Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Kansas — to push Republican candidates and causes over the November 6th finishing line by any means necessary: outrageous gerrymandering, purging hundreds of thousands of minority registrants off the voting rolls; prohibiting Sunday voting thus stopping thousands of churchgoing African-Americans from heading for the voting booths; sending instructions by mail (where, what day) voting will take place — but the date and location are wrong; having one voting machine for 30,000 minority voters; voting machines in ethnic neighborhoods that are broken or that mysteriously turn votes for Democratic candidates into Republican votes.
And on and on, certainly including the need for mandatory recusal when candidates for high office are in charge of the machinery of voting/justice, permitting them, in effect, to be their own judges and juries: see Kris Kobach in Kansas, Brian Kemp in Georgia, Donald Trump everywhere.

Given all these corrupted election/voting procedures, Democrats effectively must get 10-15% more votes than usual just to balance out all the voting-suppression illegalities. In short, winning blue, even a light Blue Wave, might not suffice. In many states and districts, it will take an absolutely massive Blue Tsunami to guarantee victory. That’s what muscular GOTV is all about: voting and helping others — especially students, minorities, etc. — get to the polls. That’s where energized, organized, determined women voters are being so effective.

4. If that Blue Tsunami doesn’t materialize on November 6th, we in our contemporary “Movement” must prepare ourselves for disappointing election results for the U.S. Senate, and in some key House races as well. Nobody said it was going to an easy and instant victory. Resistance is a constant dance: two steps forward, one step back — or , at times, one step forward, two steps back.

5. In short, politics is not bean bag —a truism too many nice, respectable Democrats are in denial about — and is played for real. The progressive Left is going to have to learn how to navigate successfully in choppier waters than we are used to, against amoral, nasty, win-at-any-price imperial Hard Rightists.

This midterm election is probably our best opportunity in years to break the authoritarian, white-nationalist momentum of Trump and his morally corrupt Republican toadies in Congress.

We’ve got our chance. Let’s not blow it. #
