I suddenly realize I've knocked the wrong door

The apartment numbers are in descending order on my list

But the actual numbering here is demented

The first floor is all 100s but it's not all of the 100s: some of the second floor is 100s and some is 200s

Likewise some of the third floor is 200s and some is 300s; and then the fourth floor is all 300s

In addition, there are separate halves of the building, neither of which is accessible from the other

I don't remember ever seeing anything quite like this before

I'm constantly confused: 305 isn't on the fourth floor. Is it on the third floor? No? If it exists at all, it must be over in the other half

I constantly flip back and forth through the pages, in an effort to keep it straight

I get my arranged literature in hand again and knock another door

Then I scan the list, trying to remember who I'm hoping to chat up

I suddenly realize I've knocked the wrong door

It's probably no big deal: hardly anyone has been home today

But then (of course!) the door opens. So I offer her my list of Democrats she can vote for

She's very interested but there's a problem: she never registered to vote

I tell her she can register and vote the same day during the early voting period

You'd think I just told her she won the lottery. After giving her the details, I retreat under a barrage of gratitude

8. I too had a great day

Almost every one on my list wasn't home but I had a treasure of other family members. I got a bunch of folks who werent sure if they were going to vote excited.

I flipped 3 folks, an independent and two Republicans.

The highlight was a Russian couple who had registered but not voted and a Syrian family who I surprised with a long list of great Americans whose parents were Syrians. They knew about Steve Jobs but didn't know about Jerry Seinfeld.

A great day for canvassing if not for the news in Pittsburgh.

If Sinema wins by 100 votes or last I am taking all the credit.

15. The first door I knocked this season was opened by two young women who weren't on my list.

They had just moved in. They were nursing students. The candidate I'm knocking for is a nurse. These two young women weren't registered yet, either--and they, too, were excited to learn that they could register and vote in the midterms.

These are people who aren't on anyone's call list. They can only be reached by knocking. Thank you!

18. You must be in Dwinelle Hall in UC Berkeley!

On the outside it looks like a regular building but when you enter it youíre actually on the 3rd floor because itís built on an incline.

It was built by two brothers who couldnít agree on anything so the result is

One side of the building is numbered in the 100s and the other in the 1,000s.

The heights of the ceilings are different on each side so that one side has one more floor than the other.

(Mind you, the outside of the buildings looks totally normal throughout)

The elevators donít show floor numbers. Instead they show letters. And these letters are different on each elevator.

UPS has dedicated delivery people for the University because it has itís own zip code and they have to know where to go because lots of areas are cut off from vehicle access for security reasons. So one of the things UPS would do would be to send their new employees to Dwinelle Hall to deliver stuff. It was a rite of passage.

During the first two or three days of classes the building manager would set up a kiosk at the main entrance to direct students to their classes.

I worked on the top floor in the outer corner of the building and would get lost people come to my office and ask for help on a daily basis.

20. Oh man, this is awesome. Your post gave me goosebumps!

Is she squared away on where her poll is located, what to do, what ID to bring, etc.?

Are you going to do a follow up and see how it went for her? I'd be tempted to! lol

You made a difference in this person's life. Right ON!!

My friend used an app to register voters. (Locates houses where voters are unregistered) She got a bunch of Jehovah Witnesses!

It makes a pretty lousy weekend better knowing that so many people are fighting this awfulness and giving so much of themselves to try to regain our country from the evil.
