(81,220 posts)If we'd had Christine Blasey Ford going second AFTER the individual my husband now refers to as "Injustice Kavanaugh" the results of that dismal week would have gone differently. But HE got the last word. HIS was the last testimony you heard. Which means HIS message was the one that stuck - the takeaway most easily remembered, precisely because it was the last one you heard. THAT'S what stuck. And the GOP understands fine points like that.
ALWAYS get the last word.
NEVER let your opponent get the last word. NOT EVER.

Fortinbras Armstrong
(4,473 posts)The Democratic Speaker of the Illinois House. He is their bogeyman. In his own district, no Republican is running against him, since they see it as a loosing proposition.
It should be noted that the Republican incumbent for governor, Bruce Rauner, isn't running on his record. He can't, since he hasn't got one. He accomplished essentially nothing in his four year term, since he is unable to compromise. The state went without a budget for over two years, because Rauner insisted that it include term limits and busting the government employees' unions. The National Review called him "the worst governor in the US". His obstinacy has cost the state jobs and over a billion dollars in interest charges and late charges because the state couldn't pay its bills (since it didn't have a budget). Illinois finally got a budget because Standard and Poor publicly announced that if a budget wasn't passed, Illinois state bonds would have junk status -- that was something that the former hedge-fund manager Rauner understood.
So Rauner's campaign theme is "I tried to reform the state, but the big bad Madigan wouldn't let me, the old meany. So give me four more years." Most Illinoisans aren't buying it.

(12,051 posts)Spanberger signs -- Brat is such an out-and-out idiot that some Republicans must certainly be ashamed of him.
In past elections, there were few to no signs for the Dem candidate (mostly because the Dem leadership never gave them one dime -- the candidate funded himself). At least this time there is a name presence for the Dem.
There are a couple of groups (one a pissed-off women's group) who have made it their mission to dump guys like Brat, and they have a huge presence here. That's what we need to do, folks!

(2,064 posts)Spanberger then listed people Brat tried to tie her to:
Her primary opponent
Hillary
Nancy Pelosi
Barak Obama
It wasnt distancing herself from Obama, it was making fun of Brat attacking people who werent running against him.
Then the statement Abagail Spanberger is my name.
I think she won the election with her performance last night.
zipplewrath
(16,646 posts)In the sense that she wanted not so much to distance herself, but to set up the line that it wasn't clear he knew who he was running against, which then sets up the closing of "is my name." She's got a good speech writer. Well structured speech.
Hekate
(90,644 posts)"Booga-booga San Francisco values", etcetera. The GOP is demonizing all our heroes and our frontrunners for every office including 2020 POTUS run.
Democratic congressional candidates have to distinguish themselves by their own credentials (Abigail is former CIA) and their own understanding of local values and issues (she's what we call a local girl, and "came back home to Virginia so her kids could be closer to their grandparents" ) .
No, she is not my hero born and raised in my own home state, the hapa-haole Barack Obama, nor is she the African-American statesman from Chicago who became POTUS. She's also not Bernie Sanders, fiery old Democratic Socialist. She is who she is.
Her opponent must have brought up those names every other sentence, trying to conflate her with the GOP fantasy of them. It's a sad feature of politics in this day and age.
MontanaMama
(23,307 posts)Gropers love to equate Dem candidates with Obama, Pelosi etc because they love to hate Obama, Pelosi etc and they believe their simpleton mouth-breathing followers will do the same. She simply pointed out that she is her own person with her own views and went on to list what they are. It was well done, IMO.
PatrickforO
(14,570 posts)The opponent probably did push polls that compared her to Obama and Pelosi and clearly he'd lied about her vision for healthcare. My take is she was rebutting things he'd said about her with those statements.
Speaking of Obama, I sure liked it when he said we shouldn't let 'the perfect be the enemy of the good.' Didn't you?

(5,126 posts)In my district, Ken Harbaugh, veteran and former President of Team Rubicon which hires veterans for disaster relief missions has been working tirelessly for months to unseat Bob Gibbs who is nothing more than a Republican placeholder. It is a heavily gerrymandered and red district. In an election with a fair electorate, Ken would win hands down. He is better than Gibbs in every metric I can imagine.
In the neighboring district, again very gerrymandered and very red, Janet Garrett, a retired teacher is also working tirelessly to take on Jim Jordan (aka gym Jordan and wanna be next Speaker of the House). She has out raised him and has been attending every community event, shaking hands, reaching out to voters, etc. for months. She is smart and capable, relatable and empathetic.
I could go on about our countless candidates that have courageously stepped up and answered the call, to campaign with their whole hearts in very tough districts. It is truly inspiring. I wish media would focus more on these profiles in courage.
