Candidate Quits After Comments on Shooting Survivors

October 12, 2018 at 11:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Steven Baleshiski (R), a legislative candidate in Connecticut who made harsh comments about Parkland High shooting victims, quit his race after losing town committee backing, the Hartford Courant reports.

Said Baleshiski: “I’m not supposed to speak ill of David Hogg because he is a ‘survivor.’ Apparently if you survive horrific events, that makes the stupidity spewing out of your mouth above reproach. I disagree. Hogg can burn in hell, I don’t care what he survived. Survivors who wage war on my country are my enemies.”

Republicans hope to find a new candidate.

1. "No candidate is perfect"

Former Southington Republican Town Committee chair Brian Callahan, who is managing Baleshiski’s campaign, said the Facebook posts were the impulsive comments of a young person long before political candidacy was a possibility.

“He’s a little young. This was a learning lesson,” Callahan said of Baleshiski. “What’s happening to him is much like what’s happening to [Supreme Court Justice Brett] Kavanaugh. They’re trying to trash him. It saddens me that this is what our country has come to. It’s like a mugging.”

Anne Reilly, Berlin’s Republican Town Committee chair, said she supports Baleshiski, describing him as a strong fiscal conservative who will work to repair the financial “calamity this state is in.”

“No candidate is perfect,” she said.

3. While it's true that no candidate is perfect, the GOPers can't seem to figure out

that their candidates should at least not be sociopaths.

9. Using his words is "a mugging"

So basically he's saying don't use his words to criticize him because he didn't know yet he should hide what he is thinking? I guess what's really shocking is that we've become so used to this kind of bs that we don't immediately reject the premise. God forbid we start using people's actions to evaluate them too.

Damn straight we can and should use someone's words to judge them.

15. Exactly on target.

This really is a battle to be fought on all levels. It seems like every right wing numbskull is feeling empowered right now, and they're coming out in droves.

5. Disagreement is treason.

4. No syncretistic faith can withstand analytical criticism. The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge. For Ur-Fascism, disagreement is treason.

10. reads like Cheetolini's marching orders

Strange how that aligns so well with the foaming-at-the-mouth rants of Republicans and their orange idol.

13. I'll point out that its fine to diagree with survivors....

But you do have to show people respect and civility, and you damn sure shouldn't focus on their membership in a group of survivors to slander and threaten them.

As much as I disagree with Steve Scalise and think he is a worthless pile of excrement, I in no way disrespect him as a survivor of a mass shooting. He has my respect and sympathy for that event. But that's as far as it goes.

Why can't they learn this simple lesson?

Oh, right, it's who they are.
