Yes, anything the insurance doesn't cover, could become the burden fo the children.

I asked in a thread yesterday (?), and got no reply. I looked all through the resources I had on Ryan's budget and came up blank.

Ok, now I know. This meme won't resonate in states w/o the applicable law.

The 29 states that have “filial responsibility” laws are:

Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.

There's some electoral heavy hitters in the list.

casts it as being responsible for them through FICA and Medicare taxes, versus voluntary help, we'll see what the next generations are made of.

My guess is that they won't be as kind as we think.

The odds would be more remote.

Unless they had a really crappy childhood.

and how there was a need to move the world through the 'demographic transition', essentially moving populations of lesser developed nations from profiles with high birth rate-high mortality rates to low-birth rate low mortality...

The arguments that were presented by college faculty were basically that socio-economic development and 'modern' social safety nets, like SS and medicare, made obsolete the need for many children whose success would provide security to their parents.

We thought we knew what we were talking about. Boy were we wrong. Republicans, under the guise of modern approaches provided by useful idiots like congressman Ryn, would return us to the ancient ponzi scheme, wherein if you are a strugging peasant you damned well do need a handful of kids so that one or more of them will provide care in a multi-generational household.

You know the house you're making mortgage payments on? You may think you are paying off the mortgage, in hopes of owning it someday. Actually, with Ryan/Romney, you are actually making payments on my future nursing home bills with your mortgage. With Ryan's plan and the changes to Medicaid, my kids will be responsible for my care, including liens against their homes and property. They do it now with the spouses, it is changing to include the children as well.
In a way, your mortgage payments are paying for tax cuts for the 1%, by shifting future costs of the elderly onto you, and taking everything you own.
So, about this election.........

on top of regular expenses to save the resources to attempt to pay bills when you (and they) can no longer work. Barely making bills as it is? Take a second, third, or fourth job. At this rate perhaps every four years enough is saved for a year of expenses once one can no longer work. Notice I don't use the word retire. That will become a reality only for those who already have acquired a large reserve of assets. Oops - am I letting my cynicism creep in and color my conversation?
