Racial inequality protests, Black Gloves provided by White Guy

I've written about this, in the past. Most people are totally unaware that Australian Peter Norman was the person who provided the infamous black gloves displayed during the 68 Olympuc's in Mexico, by Tommie Smith & John Carlos.

.
Peter Norman was ostracized, by Australia, in general, for his participation in the 68 Olympic protest; where Peter had won a Silver Medal.

At great personal cost, Peter had refused to condemn his fellow Olympians

.

Smith & Carlos suffered, greatly, as has Colin, for daring to upset the White systems and powers that be.

Though he, too, was ostracized, Peter Norman continued his fight against racial inequality, actively working for Australian's indigenous Aborigines.

Never forgetting him, Olympians Smith & Carlos were pall bearers at Peter Norman's funeral.

.
Years after his death the Australian government has apologized for how the country treated Peter Norman.

You can see details of the facts in the San Diego Union-Tribune article by Luis Gomez

.
This proves that Caucasians can make a difference by the smallest of actions.

Even if it is a pair of gloves!

1. Yes, and it was just one pair, so they had to raise different arms!

Tommie raised his right arm, but Carlos had to raise his left because he only had a left glove!

That's Peter Norman to the left of Tommie in the picture.

2. It worked out well and the left and right gloves created a symetrical, asthetic and symbolic...

arc of protest in that iconic photo.

All three of them suffered unjustly for their heroic stances.

3. Indeed.

I actually got to know Tommie Smith when I took a running class he was teaching at Santa Monica College. That was years ago in the 1980s. At that time, he was also involved in the Santa Monica Track Club. He always had a passion for running and fitness. He was a really down to earth, nice guy, with a great sense of humor.

4. Him, John Carlos, Lee Evans and Vince Matthews were my guys from that era.

I taught at a small college in the mid-2000s and a couple of track fans were in the class so I asked them about Smith and Carlos and Evans and they had never heard of them.

I couldn't believe it. I told them to google the photo of Smith and Carlos.
