Good news from and for Michigan

Some Republicans uniting behind Democrat Gretchen Whitmer for governor

By Emily Lawler

LANSING, MI - Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday announced support from Republican and independent leaders working to elect her as governor.

Leaders from past administrations have formed a group called "Republicans and Independents for Whitmer." It is co-chaired by former U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz, R-Battle Creek; Jim Haveman, the former Director of the Michigan Department of Community Health under Governor John Engler and Governor Rick Snyder; Richard McLellan, who served as Transition Director to then Governor-Elect John Engler; and Vivian Carpenter, who served as Deputy State Treasurer under former Republican Governor Bill Milliken.

"Now more than ever, Michigan needs a governor who knows how to put partisanship aside to get things done," Haveman said in a press release announcing the group's formation.

Additional members of the new group supporting Whitmer include Trish Foster, retired Senior Managing Director and COO at CBRE-Martin; former Rep. Mel Larsen (R-Oakland County), co-author of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act; Mary McLellan, a retired Department of Civil Rights employee; Bill Milliken, Jr., Real Estate Broker at Milliken Realty and son of former Governor Bill Milliken; Rod Nelson, retired CEO of Mackinac Straits Health System; John Pirich, a partner at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn; Dennis Smith, retired CEO of the UP Health Plan; Paul Tarr, President of PM Tarr and Associates; Gina Yob, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for 3S International LLC.

The polls had Whitmer ahead by +10.8 points even before these endorsements, so this is encouraging. We're still not resting, though.

Good news. Schuette is pretty much despised here. Especially on his stance on medical marijuana. Even after the people of Michigan voted for medical marijuana, he devised ways to get rid of it. With the support of the DeVosls he made it his goal to get rid of medical marijuana. It would be a hoot if the people of Michigan voted to pass legalization of pot which is on the ballot. Vote straight democratic. In Grand Rapids that Gretchen Whitmer, Winnie Brinks , and Rachel Hood.

Ugh. Winnie Brinks is awesome. I moved farther east in the state about 3 years ago. I was happy to move out of Justin Amash's district (ugh again), but landed in Mike Bishop's. Bishop is almost worse than Amash--he's nnothing but a blow-dried coward, a complete Republican hack. He hasn't held a town hall in 2 years. I hope Elissa Slotkin beats his ass. Joe Biden has been a big presence for her in this part of the state. Scheutte is despised here, too. He's getting knocked around pretty badly for his vow to eliminate the ACA Medicaid expansion. I think he's going down. At least he can fall back on all of his ill-gotten Dow Chemical money.

I'm curious--have you seen any commercials for John James over there? I haven't seen one coming from his campaign. I've seen one anti-Stabenow ad from some PAC, but nothing from his campaign. He seems to have just disappeared since the primary.

Have you been to ArtPrize? I was always conflicted about it--it was the brainchild of Dick DeVos. Oh, well. What isn't in Grand Rapids?

They see it as a lost cause now.

All we have to do now is beat the gerrymandering.

We are gonna bring it home for Gretchen and 3 great proposals in the ballot.

I know 2 former Repubs who are coming across the aisle this time around. This is a referendum on Dump in MI.
