That's the elephant in the room, and I wish it would get more attention. I haven't seen anything from Kavanaugh's lawyer joining Ford's lawyer in calling for the investigation. The guy wants to be a Supreme Court Justice for crying out loud. And he's not going to endorse his accuser's request for an impartial investigation that could erase doubts about his worthiness to sit at the pinnacle of the legal system of the United States of America?
Yeah, to me it fairly clearly looks like he did what he is accused of and then lied about. It really does. He's letting everyone else do his talking. "Future Supreme Court Justice." Blasey Ford's request for an FBI investigation has sunk Kavanaugh if people will only see it.

(13,168 posts)Republican Grassley is doing everything he can to pretend that he's bending over backwards to be fair. He's offering to send his staff to meet with Blasey wherever she wants, for example. That's a purely sneaky, nothing move toward being fair. I guess we are to conclude that his offering to buy some plane tickets is "going that extra mile" for fairness when what's really on the table is an official FBI investigation.
Republicans are doing exactly what we would expect them to do. Republican Kavanaugh is lying low letting other Republicans distract and kabuki. But Kavanaugh has effectively admitted he is guilty by doing so. An innocent man who is supposed to be worthy of the Supreme Court would be speaking up himself and showing he's made of good stuff. Kavanaugh's not doing that. He's not made of good stuff is the reasonable conclusion.

(1,583 posts)If a good reporter could get Kavanaugh to at least vacillate on whether an investigation is needed, then there would be more pressure on Trump to order an FBI investigation.

I place the blame for this squarely on MAGA mushroom's shoulders. The shitty behavior emanates from him, and it is infectious.

(9,527 posts)What is the benefit to him for an investigation? If he did it, there might be evidence. But if he didn't, there's not likely to be evidence that he didn't. And there's that even if he's innocent of this, there's the chance that it results in another woman (or women) to come forward given that his mentor had some serious problems.
He's probably guilty for the same reason most guys who are accused are guilty. The percentage of false claims is very small for all sorts of obvious reasons.

(13,168 posts)He's being mum about it. That shows he's willing to get on the Supreme Court and always have people wonder whether he's a liar and sexual assault perp. Every time he works on a case, that will haunt him. For decades. And he knows it. That's a lot of future life and reputation burden to accept when he could just join in the demand for an FBI investigation that would supposedly clear him. A few extra days for an investigation and he doesn't have to carry the lifelong burden he's now looking at. The FBI could give him a clean bill of health.
Or maybe not. The possibility that the FBI would sink him is the only obvious reason he could have for not wanting the investigation. It's very strong evidence of guilt from his own behavior.

(13,168 posts)If Kavanaugh were up for Top Secret clearance, for example, the FBI would pay a visit to all of his neighbors and search for any problems in his past history. You can bet that a sexual assault accusation would figure heavily in the investigation and could easily result in a denial of the clearance.
There doesn't have to be a law broken, in other words. That's just Trump and his Republicans lying about the roles of the FBI. The Bush I administration asked the FBI to investigate Anita Hill's allegations against Thomas. It is the same principle here.

(5,325 posts)Big difference between that and an "investigation", which is what you were advocating for in your thread title and opening post. That's what I was responding to.

(19,958 posts)They all know an FBI investigation would find the truth and Kav would be eliminated for lying and bad behavior. Kav is apparently their most reliable political hack so they really really really really want him.
