When House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan unveiled the GOP blueprint for cutting government spending, he asked Americans to make sacrifices on everything from Medicare to education, while preserving lucrative tax subsidies for the booming oil, mining and energy industries.
It turns out a constituency within his own personal investments stood to benefit from those tax breaks, Newsweek and The Daily Beast have learned.
The financial disclosure report Ryan filed with Congress last month and made public this week shows he and his wife, Janna, own stakes in four family companies that lease land in Texas and Oklahoma to the very energy companies that benefit from the tax subsidies in Ryan's budget plan.
Ryan's father-in-law, Daniel Little, who runs the companies, told Newsweek and The Daily Beast that the family companies are currently leasing the land for mining and drilling to energy giants such as Chesapeake Energy, Devon, and XTO Energy, a recently acquired subsidiary of ExxonMobil.
Some of these firms would be eligible for portions of the $45 billion in energy tax breaks and subsidies over 10 years protected in the Wisconsin lawmakers proposed budget. Those (energy developing companies) benefit a lot from these subsidies, explained Russ Harding, an energy policy analyst with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, when presented with the situation, without reference to Ryan. Without those, theyre going to be less profitable.

(55,745 posts)A man I know asked his nephew about keeping unused campaign contributions after the nephew left state office due to term limits: "How much do you have in your war chest? $100,000? $150,000?" he asked. "Uncle, keep going," the former state senator told him. "What do you do with it? Give it to the (GOP) party?" "No, uncle, I'm going to keep it." "Isn't that illegal?" my friend asked. "Illegal?" his nephew replied. "No, uncle, it's legal. Remember, we make the laws."

The Real Agenda Behind Paul Ryans Deficit-Slashing Mania

If you want to see House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan sanctimoniously excuse himself and his friends for missing the most predictable economic crisis in the history of the world, you now have the opportunity: In a YouTube video produced by his staff, Ryan tells viewers that the crisis called by the collapse of the housing bubble caught us by surprise.
SNIP...
The bubble was driving the economy both directly by propelling a construction boom and indirectly through the impact of housing bubble wealth on consumption. When the bubble burst, there would be nothing to replace this bubble driven-demand. It would be necessary to run the sort of large government budget deficits that we have seen the last four years in order to sustain the economy and keep unemployment rate out of the double digits.
All of this was 100 percent predictable and predicted. However Representative Ryan wants to give himself the blanket who could have known amnesty because he and his Wall Street friends chose to ignore the people who were giving the warnings.
SNIP...
If we can skip the sanctimony lets just say what every budget wonk knows to be true. We dont have a budget problem; we have a health care cost problem. If per person health care costs in the United States were in line with those in any other wealthy country we would be looking at huge budget surpluses, not deficits.

(634 posts)I suspect he profited on some insider trading before the 2008 crash. He attended a closed-door meeting on troubled banks with Bernanke ( and others ) then immediately turned around and sold all his bank shares and bought shares in Vampire-Squid ( Goldman Sachs ).
He also used to drive the Wiener-mobile for Oscar Meier .

(35,015 posts)I just hope people aren't so focused on Ryan's crap that they let Romney's slide....Marriott deal, tax returns, illegally structured IRA....need I go on?
Hopefully, both will receive the appropriate scrutiny but in order to belive they will, I'd need to have faith in our media.

We have become a us-vs-them nation without regard for principle. Unfortunately, our side displays a lot of the same blind faith. And we wonder why thinking people are shunning politics.

Actually, not wow. It's not surprising at all. It's sad, if not outright pathetic, that people are fooled by such greedy bastards.
