...will remember lots of speculation over the identity of “Deep Throat.” I saw people guessing Alexander Haig, Henry Kissinger, and even Gerald Ford (a year before he became V.P.). The speculation continued for years/decades after Nixon left office but, when Mark Felt outed himself, it came as a complete surprise to everybody.

As for the NY Times Op=Ed, I'm wondering if the point was to provoke a reaction from Trump, which isn't necessarily a good thing in the short term.
