1.NEW THIS WEEK
UNHINGED
by Omarosa Manigault Newman
The reality TV star and former White House staffer describes her time and relationship with Donald Trump.
Yeah, I know she is a flawed narrator and a lot of people don't like her, but she has written a very good book.
Unhinged is a horror story. There is some downright scary shit in this book, most of it centered on her telling of episodes that make clear that Trump has some kind of mental acuity deficiency that has caused serious impairment and makes him unable to carry out his duties as president.
Another thing she bitterly writes about is the culture of racism and misogyny in the West Wing. She convincingly writes how racism is the basis of a lot of policy coming out of the White House. Not just Trump's racism, but also that of Gen. Kelly and Betsy Devos. Omarosa hates both Kelly and Devos with the heat of a thousand suns, and for good reason.
I'm glad I read it.

(5,811 posts)no old ass racist is gonna call a black woman a dog and I let that shit go.
Yeah I'm buyin her book even if I don't forgive her for all the shit she did to help that piece of shit. It's gonna take the African American community a long long time before we welcome her back to the fold. But she's stil family so I'm gonna buy her book.

(10,885 posts)I had resisted buying it, thinking there would be a lot of hyperbole in it, but I've come to realize that Omarosa is shrewd enough not to be stupid and embellish. Also, wasn't keen on putting $$$ in her pocket, as I don't care for her. It annoys me that this book is making her relevant and she is being sought out as an expert by all the media outlets.
Still, I'm nosy, curious, and dying for the Donny Dirt!

(31,261 posts)Our nation is a cult of personality. I doubt that we will see any more Steinbecks, Rawlings, once unknown writers like that simply won't get published and if they do, they may sell 200,000 books, if they are very lucky. Meanwhile, the Omarosas', Kardashians sell millions of books, even if every sentence is nothing but vacuous bullshit.

(55,445 posts)If she really gave a shit about Trump's racism, she would have torpedoed Trump's campaign before it started to build momentum... At the inauguration she said that liberals would "bow down and kiss his ring"... She stood up to be counted with the fucking enemy and only broke with them out of personal profit with her stupid fucking book deal... And she's been teasing these mythical tapes (which will only further reinforce what everyone already knows) for far too long..
She's on the hustle and everyone has been lapping it up

(55,445 posts)her boss was a racist is an insult to our collective intelligence...
And voters aren't going to instantly drop Donnie because of his racism when it was his racism that drew voters to him in the first place.

(1,736 posts)I am seeking multiple perspectives and didn't pay attention to the hype surrounding the author. I also thought the James Comey, Amy Chozick, and Michael Wolff books had interesting and clarifying content. Going on to read Hillary Clinton's book and maybe a Trump book.
The first three of these books have been modest time investments and very informative. I would recommend them to any political junkie or concerned citizen, as they have deepened my understanding of the grave national crisis we are facing.

(25,485 posts)political books as is right now...we are in a grave national crisis and the ones bestowed with the power to something about it, are sitting on their hands....there is shit O could really do about it

True enough.
I found the book to be a worthy and clarifying read. But opinions vary.

(1,736 posts)I am about halfway done - for me, it's about a 3-4 hour read, no more than your average football game or movie. I find it to be an interesting human story of a black woman who came up from poverty, losses of family members due to urban violence, and earned an education and became a public personality. And of course, she didn't pick up the clue phone about Trump until it was way too late. Kinda like a lot of our country. IMO, if you're not demanding impeachment of this incompetent and corrupt president, you still haven't picked up the clue phone.
I also find it interesting to hear about her journey to supporting the Trump campaign after initially supporting Clinton, including the insights on Black Republicans and some of the reasons why she and so many others found Trump compelling.
I agree wholeheartedly that we should all be learning from history to avoid repetition of our worst failings. This book has some insights in that direction.
Opinions of books always vary. In a pluralistic world, I think it's always better to get multiple stories. A lot of so-called experts didn't manage to see this political upheaval coming, and it probably won't be the experts that get us out of this mess. The way out will result from determined, ordinary people picking up where Mueller leaves off, fighting and winning in the midterms, or we'll be looking at a Trump re-election campaign.

(5,042 posts)Of course her book is going to paint herself in the best light possible. I find her to be no better than a Kardashian, a "time for my 15 minutes" fame whore who sadly managed to board the gravy train to the White House of this used car salesman along with a bunch of other c and d-list celebs. I'm still not totally convinced this isn't some stunt cooked up by the two of them to "boost ratings" which this senile old orange fool seems to think is what the Presidency is all about. Fuck Trump and Fuck Omarosa. They have ruined out country for the next five decades with their quest for views, money and "the lulz".

(1,736 posts)I am less apt to watch reality TV and visit click bait celebrity web sites than to read a long narrative that requires commitment to compose. I am interested in probing into why generally reasonable people find Trump compelling. So I'm not disappointed in that respect.
I don't think she tries to pretend that she didn't make a huge mistake in her support for Trump, and in that sense I don't think she portrays herself in an overly favorable light.
But I am not her publicist or a particular admirer, and there's no reasonable defense of active support for Trump. I agree 100 percent with you on that.
