For the moment, the Republicans will not turn on Trump. They fear a peasant revolt, many of them; they still crave favors; they may think his castle impregnable, although less so if they believe what the polls tell them about some of its tottering walls. But if they suffer a medieval-style slaughter on Election Day, the remnants of the knights of the GOP will know a greater fear than that of being primaried. And at the moment when they no longer fear being swept away in 2020 .. they will suddenly turn on Trump ...

(b) Their main fear will become fear of prosecution for their numerous crimes in support of the tyrant.

(46,166 posts)He's distracted us with his clown act and he's worked to diminish our institutions and social protections. His job is about finished. As soon as the last part gets installed in the engine and they control the SCOTUS he can be dismissed.

(6,377 posts)A good chunk of his base doesn't have any faith in the Republican party anymore, they're only loyal to Trump. If he loses...what happens to them? Do they just sort of fade out, demoralized and uninterested in political and voting now that their guy is out? Or will they stick around and keep voting for the same Republicans that Trump is openly insulting nonstop now?
