Saudi Arabia beheads female activist in public

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) – The Thefreethoughts Twitter account and other Saudi sources said the female, named as Esra al-Ghamgam, was executed on the prosecutor’s orders on Sunday.

It shared a video showing an executioner fixing her in a recumbent position on the ground before decapitating her with a sword as security forces stood by.

Ghamgham was detained alongside her husband Seyyed Musa Ja’afar Hashem during a security raid on their house in the mainly Shia region of Qatif in Eastern Province on December 8, 2015.

Citing the Twitter account, London-based al-Quds al-Arabinewspaper reported earlier that her detention had come in response to her “anti-establishment” activities.

It said the activist used to take part in peaceful protests in the region in support of democracy and release of political prisoners.

The kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has been trying to portray himself as the champion of social reformation and a liberalizing figure.

Back in May, he lifted the kingdom’s ban on female driving but shortly before it, Saudi security forces went on an arrest spree of female activists, including some of the people who had supported the removal of the ban.

The campaigners are reportedly still behind bars, with both the arrests and continued detentions drawing outspoken criticism from international rights groups.

are shocked that the Saudis behead convicted criminals, yet in the US we have the electric chair, lethal injection, and firing squads have at least been discussed, not sure if they've been used or not.

and the video shown all over twitter was an old one, not of Israa al-Ghomgham.

Here is a fairly recent article:
https://www.ibtimes.com/first-womans-execution-saudi-arabia-may-be-supporting-anti-government-protests-2710119

False reports that Ghomgham was already executed

Several media sources have already reported that Ghomgham has already been executed. One source claims: " The Thefreethoughts Twitter account and other Saudi sources said the female, named as Esra al-Ghamgam, was executed on the prosecutor’s orders on Sunday. It shared a video showing an executioner fixing her in a recumbent position on the ground before decapitating her with a sword as security forces stood by.

However, the video is from an earlier beheading of a Saudi woman that was widespread on social media who was incorrectly identified as Ghomgham. Also the photo was not of Ghomgham either but of Samar Badawi another imprisoned Saudi activist.
Relatives and activists have refuted the reports. Ghomgham's sister expressed sadness at what she described as the false news that was circulating. She said the reports did nothing to advance Ghomgham's cause and caused distress to the family.

That still photo is not of her.

On 6 August, in a first hearing before the Specialised Criminal Court in the capital, the public prosecutor recommended the death penalty for six defendants, including Ghomgham and her husband, Moussa al-Hashem, who have been jailed for nearly three years on charges of anti-government protests, incitement to disobedience of the ruler, and providing moral support to participants in anti-government protests in the Shia-majority eastern region of Qatif.
...
The final session for Ghomgham's case is scheduled for 28 October. A judge will either confirm or reverse the death penalty recommendation issued by the public prosecutor in August.
...
A video from 2015 showing the beheading of a Saudi woman spread on social media erroneously identifying the woman in question as Ghomgham, while a photo of Samar Badawi, another imprisoned Saudi activist, was wrongly circulated as being Ghomgham.

However, relatives and activists have refuted reports that Ghomgham had been executed, adding there were no readily available photographs because she wears the niqab, or face veil.

That photo is shown as Samar Badawi here in 2015: https://www.esohr.org/en/?m=201503

But if she hasn't yet been executed, then publicising her plight is even more important. The article above points out that since none of the charges against her involve violence, the death sentence should not have been applied, under Saudi law.
