(8,885 posts)I expect they are worried if they don't get him out now and he drops out when its too late to change the ballot they risk losing the seat. Its a strong red district so perhaps they are thinking if they can get a legit candidate on the ballot they improve their chances to win. But I am guessing.
SergeStorms
(18,882 posts)For some reason that district - which completely surrounds the City of Buffalo - doesn't include Buffalo! Imagine that.
But yes, western New York is - much to my chagrin - a very red area. It's part of the "rust belt"; steel workers, Hooker Chemical workers (remember Love Canal?), grain processing workers, and a host of other businesses that have closed up shop forever. With those Union jobs gone, the place turned redder than red.

(56,827 posts)and, while the camp itself was very nice some of the towns up there a very rural and very poor, lots of older pickup trucks and I would not have been surprised to see gun racks and/or confederate flags flying from them (yes, I know NY is solidly in the northern part of the country... but, I just had that feeling about the area)
Kind of sad actually - all those nice hotels that were depicted in movies like Dirty Dancing are gone. I think there is one of them left.
The "big" cities up there have been mostly in decline since the 1950s/60s - Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany.
Buffalo had a population of 580,000 in 1950, 530,000 in 1960, 463,000 in 1970, 358,000 in 1980, and around 260,000 today.

(11,175 posts)Each redistricting must be approved by both houses of the legislature and signed by the Governor (or passed over his veto).
Republicans control the State Senate and Democrats control the Assembly. Therefore, regardless of who's Governor, the redistricting must have the support of both parties. They generally reach the same compromise each time, namely protecting the incumbents.
All this is Cuomo's fault because he has, until this year, played footsie with the traitor Democrats of the Independent Democratic Conference -- a group of State Senators who are elected as Democrats but who then caucus with the Republicans. Cuomo found it expedient to let the Senate stay in Republican hands so as to block progressive legislation. That way, he doesn't have to face the choice of signing or vetoing such a bill, when either choice might alienate some Democrats.
If Cuomo had brought all his weight to bear, New York would be a Democratic "trifecta" -- control of the governorship plus both houses of the state legislature.
FakeNoose
(32,331 posts)Not only are you incorrect about the timeline - the NY-27th gerrymandering happened before Cuomo's first term which began in 2014.
But also in general - Andrew Cuomo is an accomplished Democratic governor of a premier state, and he's running for re-election. He deserves our support and he get will get it. Any petty political beefs you may have with Governor Cuomo can be discussed privately, not in a public forum.
I have great respect for Andrew's father Mario Cuomo, and I realize that it may be a reason for my tolerance of the son's straying from the fold. However in this year of all years - party unity is the ultimate goal.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)You write, " Any petty political beefs you may have with Governor Cuomo can be discussed privately, not in a public forum." You are welcome to present that proposed rule change to the DU admins. Until then, I am free to post criticisms of Cuomo -- and, yes, you're free to dismiss them as "petty political beefs" if you want. Both positions are within the bounds of permissible disagreement on this forum.
I can understand your bias toward Cuomo because of respect for his father. In my case it works the other way. The sadness that this apple fell so far from the tree probably makes me even more negative about him than I otherwise would be.

(58,785 posts)who now has a shot. Unfortunately, he's not a strong candidate. He has experience as a city manager but doesn't live in the district. In fact, the state party asked him not to run but to leave the field open for Cuomo's lieutenant governor to be the long shot against Collins. He ran anyway, and the national and state Democratic parties declined to divert funds and other resources from more promising races to his.
Now suddenly the seat's in play, and Nate McMurray, of necessity, is the Democratic Party's man. Three days ago he had 4 campaign volunteers and something over $100K in donations, and now the money's pouring in and I'm guessing volunteers too.

pangaia
(24,324 posts)All I can say is that your comments, while I am SURE are honest and, in many ways "factual," do not describe the reality. You do not know what is really going on here...
Just for one thing, three days ago there were already hundreds of 'volunteeers.' depending on how one describes a volunteer. The 'four volunteer', (and I think Nate actually said something like that) is very misleading when taken out of context.
-The whole Cuomo thing was just political games,, as usual.
- He tried to pressure Hochul into running AS a sacrificial lamb, by the way.. She refused to take the bait.
-Actually, Nate STOOD UP to the political pressure-and he is a far better candidate than the others who were running
- the 'doesn't live in the district' also doesn't tell the whole story...
- Nate is the candidate "of necessity' Oh no, he has been running and fighting since january with basically no money...
--it sound to me like your comments are based on media articles and such...."from a distance."
I've met him several times, attended campaign events, walked in parades, seen him in action and this guy is a really strong candidate ! he is the real deal..... And I say that not even necessarily agreeing 100% with what he says.......
Anyway.. sounds like I am ragging on you.. which I am not...
I've been, in the past, the subject of TOO MANY newspaper articles, interviews, reviews etc. not to know how much reporters and writers do not know about a subject... and when reality is pared cdown to bullet points... it disappears into a fog.
Will he win? If I didn't think he could, I wouldn't put my little money behind him and help him as I can....
That said.. Nate DOES NEED $$$$$$$$$$
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)present pictures so different from yours, but you recognized 100% accurately how I got my "information." I know how unfortunately common this can be from being a person on the scene myself and hoped what little they wrote was better than it turns out to be.
But I love that you think our candidate's the real thing. And that the new hope and energy aren't the beginning but building on what was already there.
Btw, I definitely noticed that both media, and a couple others I checked briefly, gave almost no attention to who he is and what he would bring to the office. The dominant theme I remember was developed around complaints that the DCCC and state party wouldn't return his calls when he wanted to run, give him money, didn't care about his candidacy, etc.
And, btw, I'd figured out right away that you were informing, not ragging. So thanks again. Good fortune to Nate and your district, in both meanings.

Funny how a terrible car accident, plane crash, huge fire, flood, WAR, can bring out the media.... they just gulp it in like they are short of breath. Without it, they don't know what to do.
Like leaches, sometimes.......
The guy has been driving all over the district in his "Fusion," as he likes to say. :> )
I first met him in a parade on July 4th. I had never heard of him until about a week before.
I met his 2 main campaign guys-- who both, look like they have no clue what they are doing and sound like it, too. LOL !! Amateurs, really.. But, damn, they DO know !!!! Now he needs more professional help. And I think he knows how to be his own boss.
He is of the people, that is for sure.

(32,331 posts)The Democratic Party didn't want to waste their resources running against Chris Collins. That's how they feel about every GOP incumbent in a gerrymandered district. WTF?! Why doesn't the DNC just lie down and die then? If we aren't giving the Repugs any opposition, we should just crown them all incumbents for life.
The Democratic Party has to be better than this. We need new, younger candidates who aren't afraid and are willing to try. The old guard should just retire and get out of the way. Give voters a choice, show them that it doesn't have to be the same old tired, rich white men every time.
Put up a fight in every district, and be sure to support the Dem. candidates who do exactly that!
Nate McMurray deserves the support of the entire Democratic Party.

MineralMan
(146,190 posts)of the district, since he owns homes in other places. I suspect he'll do just that, technically, and the GOP will select a candidate to appear on the ballot. There is still an opportunity there, I think, to flip that seat, even if only temporarily.
The crooked nature of Republicans sometimes gets them in trouble, it seems.

He says nothing about taking his name off the ballot, rejecting his party's nomination for Congress or not taking part in the election. He is in a district that is extremely safe for a Republican. So is he quitting or is he just going to go through the elections without campaigning at all?
Cosmocat
(14,543 posts)This was my thought.
If he stays on the ballot, gets elected, hes going to just retire?
Jersey Devil
(9,863 posts)Can't find the article right now, but it said the only way he would come off the ballot with someone else replacing him is if he is nominated for another political office (like local judge) or moves out of the jurisdiction (he owns homes in 2 other states). So he would likely have to say he is moving to open up the ballot slot. Let's see if he does that. But if he does "move", wouldn't that disqualify him from continuing to represent the district in Congress for the remainder of his current term?
H2O Man
(73,308 posts)My understanding is that the plan is to put him on the ballot for Town Clerk, allowing the republicans the ability to replace him on the ballot per congress.

Sounds cockamamie, and I may have misread it the other day, but if the pubs can get another candidate to bail (say dog catcher), and he fills it, they can appoint his replacement. Sound hinkey to me.
I expect some clarification real soon.
Edited to add this:
Jessica Proud, a spokeswoman for the New York state Republican Party, said party officials are weighing their options. She said no decision has been made about a possible replacement for Collins on the ballot if they are able to replace him.

New York Democrats believe they have a better shot of flipping the red, Buffalo-area seat if the embattled congressmans name stays on the ballot, and they want to keep Republicans from replacing him with a potentially less toxic candidate.
Our contention and a lot of peoples contention is this is fraudulent to get him off the ballot, Erie County Democratic Party Chairman Jeremy Zellner told The Hill on Tuesday.
This is borderline fraud, Zellner added. It is too late to get him off the ballot.
Federal officials last week arrested and charged Collins with securities fraud related to his involvement with an Australian pharmaceuticals company, giving Democrats hope they could win a GOP-held seat that wasn't even on campaign officials radar days ago.
In 2016, Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the western New York district by nearly 25 percentage points.
