Participants were asked to rate their positions depending on how strongly they agreed or disagreed with the proposals.
Next, they were instructed to explain, in as much detail as they could, the impacts of implementing each one. Most people at this point ran into trouble. Asked once again to rate their views, they ratcheted down the intensity, so that they either agreed or disagreed less vehemently"
In my own life I've evolved from arguing facts with people about e.g. Socialism - which I'm not advocating - to asking them to define the word. 99.9% of the time people can't. Mostly they don't even try. Because they know they don't know.
Hopefully forcing people to acknowledge their ignorance they will be less vehement in their beliefs about that topic going forward.
At the very least it usually makes people stopping attacking each other.... So that's a kind of a win.
