For someone who supposedly was a model. (I guess she wasnt really modeling clothes) she always looks hideous. The yellow dress, now this suit to meet the queen is terrible. She has zero sense of style.

I tend to gravitate toward fashions like that to hide MY OWN figure flaws. That style of gown would be PERFECT for someone built like me.
But for an occasion like this, I would have worn something a little less eye-catching.
I read that the royals, ESPECIALLY Queen Elizabeth, have the convention of wearing colors so they can clearly be seen in a crowd. If you'll notice, Her Majesty is frequently seen in eye-poppingly green and in today's case, a very bright royal blue.
I suspect Nikki Haley dresses the way she often does for the same reason. Just something I've noticed through the years.

(58,785 posts)you say, trying to outshine the queen, in her own country no less! Good grief.
Best guess -- what do I know, except that apparently dresses exquisitely tailored to show off boobs seemingly hanging free are in? -- she doesn't have bad clothes taste for billionaires' trophy wives, a special society after all. But she doesn't seem to know or care that styles for first-lady society should trump trophy wife style.
Reminding me of when she wore sparkling white to the mud-covered Gulf Coast disaster zone, where many tens of thousands were filthier than they'd ever been in their lives. She was there, but not there at all.

(80,693 posts)Not only for a visit with The Queen but also - daytime. That's a big-ticket night-time gala outfit. Or what one might wear to an inaugural ball - AS First Lady. Or on the red carpet if one is an Oscar nominee or presenter or something of that caliber. Poor taste in this case. WAY overdressed. And she has NO claim to royalty of any sort, so she should have toned it down. But you're right - she does dress the role of the high-roller's trophy wife.

(1,148 posts)She'd actually look better in something fitted and maybe a shorter skirt, but maybe she's dressing conservatively for the Queen. I mean, if you've got the body, it doesn't help to hide it. Not saying she should dress sexy, but something a little more flattering for her figure. I mean, the duchesses don't dress like that, she should take her cue from them. That blush or "white" or whatever it is is way too old for her.
I actually thought the "see through" dress was one of the nicer things she's worn. But I guess it's not formal enough for the Queen.
Michelle Obama was a great dresser. Working-class from the south side of Chicago and she always knew how to dress.
Except for the color, Melania looks like a North Korean or Soviet spy. It's a little severe and military.
haele
(12,581 posts)A more tailored, less military looking suit top, a slightly wider belt in perhaps a pastel color (sort of a spring to summer look) or a watermarked shade of the color of her hair might work better. It's supposed to be a tea, not an interview or hostage negotiation...
She should also be wearing shorter heels, just so she tower so much over her hostess.
But then, if I were her stylist, I'd probably be fired a long time ago, because politics trumps talent in Drumpf world.

(27,758 posts)and I have that very same problem with Kate Middleton's look. That belt (which doesn't need to be there at all, or should be the same color as the suit) should hang a good five inches lower. And the pockets need to go.
Melania's clothes never, ever, fit, but one problem is today's crop of designers who don't seem to be designing for the human figure.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,267 posts)She doesn't have a human figure. She's been boobily enhanced to the point where her clothes don't hang properly.

(21,596 posts)Thus, her bespoke clothing seems to be tailored to place the waist a bit higher than her natural waist. She also has slim hips and she needs to define a waistline.
LisaM

bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Shes got too problems, very large and low hanging boobs, and a short torso her waist is just a few inches below the bottom of her boobs. Her dilemma is she shouldnt ever wear anything fitted at the waist- but she wants to show off her body. She cant solve it by shoving her boobs in our face as she used to. She needs a softer fit and a boob reduction. But yeah, using her natural waist is not flattering at all.
LisaM
(27,758 posts)I think her natural waist has to be a little lower than that. And the fake boobs do not help.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)And Im talking about for models who know their bodies very very well. Its becasue its been almost a generation that wears clothes below their natural waist (on their high hip) and think that means where it is. They often dont believe me when I show them its found by tying a string there till theres no slack. We havent really done high waisted styles since the mid 80s to early 90s.
A persons waist is the smallest part of their torso between their boobs and hips, no matter where it falls. The shorter you are the harder it is to deal with those extreme curves, and it looks like her waist is quite a bit high. Those clothes are tailored to nip in at her natural waist, and her boobs look low and scrunched together so much its giving her a weird pooch in the center above her waist. But to tailor perfectly fit her body in that area , it would be toocurvy and Jessica Rabbit sexy, becasue her boobs are so over-enhanced. She should go with a demi-fit, skim the waist. But shes not sophisticated enough and their whole esthetic is about wow big boobs!
LisaM
(27,758 posts)I have a rather low waist, and I hate these high-waisted styles that people are wearing, with those little belts. Everything is tight on me there and I have a pretty healthy bust. If I get shirts that fit, the armholes are so big you can see everything underneath. It's a challenge.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Fool the eye and reshape your body. Youre lucky you have a low waist, though! Its easier to fool the eye and look long legged than it is to lengthen your torso. My rib cage is long AF and my hips high so my natural waist doesnt nip in a whole lot.
The armhole thing happens becasue instead of using bust darts, they pivot that excess fabric into the armhole. You should look for styles w darts and smaller armholes. Side and vertical waist darts both help, but the vertical ones are soo much easier to tailor- or even add. Damn, you can just buy a loose shirt, put it on inside out and pin that puppy till the fit up front looks cleaner. Easy!
LisaM
(27,758 posts)I also have broad shoulders. I always have to buy my clothes too big to attend to a couple of areas.....
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)It should be very easy and cheap to add vertical darts - front and back, to reduce volume and flatter you so much more. Try experimenting w some safety pins and talk to a sewer about it. Youd be surprised the difference it makes.
RobinA
(9,874 posts)the right bra. I feel the same way about Ivanka. There are some pretty bodacious women out there (Oprah, for one) who manage to support the girls adequately. The Trump ladies aren't anywhere near Oprah, but have major sag going on.
LisaM
(27,758 posts)That said, the Trumps could probably afford seamstresses, however, they would probably stiff them on the bill. Maybe they already have and that's what's going on, a Dressmakers Revolt!
But I don't think fake ones have to sag. When you go up in size, you just can't wear the double D version of the B you used to wear, you have to call for reinforcements, and if you are in the public eye, go for an actual bra fitting by someone who knows what they are doing!
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Her boobs are just sitting on the waist. Its actually hard to alter for higher fuller boobs without screwing up the armhole fit, which they did well here. But yeah, a better bra would help. And wearing it for fittings is essential.

(9,874 posts)I think that yellow dress is gorgeous, if a little ingenueish for Melania. (I mean the state dinner yellow, not that horror above.) I don't think she looks hideous much of the time, I think she looks uncomfortable. I also think her clothes tend to, and are meant to, upstage the people around her. It's possible to dress well and not make the other women around you, the ones that have actual accomplishments in life, look like scullery maids by comparison.

(12,581 posts)Yeah, "No Liberal around here would ever judge on appearance". Snark is bad. It's so-o-o petty, judgmental and divisive, to boot.
Because we all know all real liberals progressives are always polite and serious, like stereotypical bureaucrats and TV drama pastors, or talking socialization dolls for four to six year olds reared by middle class helicopter parents.
Real liberals and progressives are all about the cause; no fun at parties, and their jokes - if they have any - are always "dad jokes".
I don't snark on Melania just because of her poor fashion sense. I snark on Melania because her public actions over the years have exposed her true arrogant, and rather pitiably ugly attitudes on the world's stage, and she's trying to gaslight us into believing she has even a quarter of the natural grace of a Michelle Obama or even the rather common interests that Laura Bush takes in the world around her.
The fact that her own stylists either don't understand her position or don't care what she looks like in public says a lot about her character.
Our snark on her fashion is a very, very small way of calling her and the administration that props her up out.
Melania Trump not so much a victim of circumstance as a willing accomplice who's in way over her head - and she's unwilling to play the part of either some form of "hostage of fortune" poor little rich girl or the wife of a powerful man who is expected to be a public influence.

seems to be a style. I am currently binge watching Suits, the TV show. In this, you can see the belt is cinching things up in an awkward way.

Unfortunately, she's still trying the old belt trick, because the surgery has her fooled that she only looks 27 and she still thinks the belt works.
