Transmission of rabies virus usually begins when infected saliva of a host is passed to an uninfected animal. The most common mode of rabies virus transmission is through the bite and virus-containing saliva of an infected host. Though transmission has been rarely documented via other routes such as contamination of mucous membranes (i.e., eyes, nose, mouth), aerosol transmission, and corneal and organ transplantations.

(19,558 posts)The risk of exposure is still there. With or without a bite. The virus is present on the body due to grooming, and other various secretions.

(115,677 posts)They get it in utero and raccoons often don't show any symptoms for a long time. People think raccoons are cute fuzzy friends but they can be very dangerous in this manner.
This woman thought she was rescuing it, and her friends just wanted to see it. How does karma applies in this case?
