http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/06/the-british-russia-collusion-scandal-is-breaking-wide-open.html" In Britain, billionaire businessman Arron Banks financed the Brexit referendum with the largest donation in British history. Initially, he copped to having one meeting with Russian officials. After the Guardian obtained secret documents blowing up this claim, he admitted there were actually three meetings. Now the Times has even more information, and Banks concedes the number of covert meetings has grown to four."

I don't always understand Americans discussing foreign policy or imperial ambition.
The. US has been bullying this planet for way too long.

(11,730 posts)The US has just been fortunate enough not have had our home front destroyed by wars.
I agree with you malaise, that he US has definitely done things that have had horrific consequences. We have interfered in the affairs of Latin America pretty much since we became a country. We have supported right wing dictators all around the globe so that our domestic companies could exploit cheap labor and resources. We have been fighting in some place or other for all but 30 or so years of our existence as a country.
I would say however, that countries like Russia and China have the same ambitions. They just haven't been able to get the momentum and power necessary to impose themselves in the way that Spain did in the 16th and 17th centuries, that England and France did in the 17th and 18th centuries, and that Germany tried to do in the early and mid 20th. Russia had always had a lot of land and resources but had always been considered a second tier empire. Even when they were a Superpower during the Soviet era after WWII, it was an inflated estimate and when the USSR crumbled, it was a slap in the face. Putin has made his political and financial fortune off of regaining a glory that Russia has striven for but never truly achieved. China was a global player long long ago, but got pushed around considerably by the colonial empires in the 17th through 20th centuries and by the US in modern times. They would like to regain the influence that China has had historically as well. The two countries are using the means at their disposal to do so.
The US is also not solely a "bad actor"

So if there's time, please explain your stated confusion with private citizens discussing imperial ambitions of both this and other nations.

(251 posts)I read this in the morning and it just points to a massive win for the Russian psyops team. They not only managed to put a Russian agent into the presidency of the US, but also initiate the breakup of the European Union. All to counteract their own self-created isolationism from Europe.

(22,478 posts)I've read where Putin influenced that vote and that most people don't want it. I bet if they did another vote, just to make sure it is the will of the people, they'd find it truly isn't.

(51,584 posts)It doesn't matter where you live and whether or not it is cold, hard cash, oil, or other valued items. Greed and power are making the 1% wealthiest people (mostly men by the way) on Earth the most dangerous. There is a rapidly growing global economic and political crisis as they continue to create an enormous chasm between the mega rich and the rest of the population.

(7,430 posts)Conversely, it's the exposure of the plot that weakens it. That's why these news scoops are vitally important. We learn. The UK also learns, and they have the power to understand that their Brexit vote was corrupt, it was heavily influenced by Russian (and US, through Cambridge Analytica) interference. Parliament can nullify the vote if they wish, and/or they can have another election, knowing what they know now. If so, it will be a very different result. As a matter of respect toward their EU neighbors, having a UK re-vote would give credibility and authenticity to decisions on the EU's future.

As we're to find out, not really. An ever revolving cast of characters, mysterious cash flows, hinky election data, deal making, secret meetings and wait for it . . . Russian interference.
What a remarkable coincidence! I'm positively gobsmacked.

(15,241 posts)Nobody likes being jerked around like the folks in London do to their territories.
The EU did extraordinarily well given the huge numbers of peoples and cultures and histories/animosities. Then along comes the UK and says we want to secede - but we want to still control all of our peoples/lands and keep trading in beneficial-to-us terms.
Of course, this is all bollocks since that ass-hat in the Kremlin was directing the Brexit people in the first place. Just like he's grabbed the balls of the US politicians and many other "important" ($$$$) people.
Cunning. Maybe SMERSH?

(21,745 posts)in order to profit in wild swings in value of the pound. Trump pal Nigel Farage figures prominently, alternately announcing failure of Brexit (causing the pound to rise) and then conceding success of vote (causing the pound to fall). This was done in collusion with big banks, hedge funds and polling firms, who would invest by shorting the pound before new "announcements".
Apparently, much as the Trumps didn't think they would win, the investors behind this scheme didn't think the Brexit vote would actually pass. They just knew they could profit from the market uncertainty and chaos.

He cannot exactly invade them to weaken them so he finds people willing to act as agents to do it for him.
