The 87% of GOP that support Trump

The media seems obsessed with the idea that Trump is more popular with Republicans that any other GOP president in modern history. They scream 87%!!!!!! It's one more way that they try to normalize him.

The point that everyone seems to be missing is that there are a considerable number of Republicans who switched to Independent in heir registration and affiliation because they can't stomach Trump. This was most recently demonstrated by the fact that Independents now outnumber Republicans in California for the first time. The GOP is now the 3rd most popular party in California with Democrats and Independents number 1 and 2, respectively.

So, 87% of GOP voters is polling a shrinking and smaller than normal pool of people who admit to pollsters that they are Republicans.

I wonder why no one is making that point instead of spreading the false narrative that Democratis votes in California were anemic.

You know what they say: Figures lie and liars figure.

It’s the non racist, non sexist, Republicans that are the problem.
They know what Trump is but they look away just to get their tax cuts, deregulation, and conservative judges.
Funny thing is, that Pence would give them all of those things without the crazy antics.

all those squeaky-clean Christian small business people, farmers, and other everyday working folks that fell for the big scam.

However, they have no valid excuse. Even if people didn't know anything about tRump, anyone with enough sense to use a fact checker could have seen right through him and his lies in the campaign.

This is characteristic of very selfish, self-centered people who care of nothing more than a little more money in their wallets.

But from what I've seen this seems to be a legit phenomenon. For a small but relevant portion of the electorate, whether they identify as R vs I, or D vs I, depends upon their opinion of the R or D big-name/office incumbent. They might be a generally reliable R, or D, but if they loathe the incumbent POTUS, when the pollster calls they say they're I.

the gop voters are completely tribal about it, it’s like a cult; it doesnt matter what trump does they will support him no matter what. This has never been the case with any other president. They were quick turning on bush. He is doing what republicans have been talking non stop for years: eliminate medicare, social security, subsidized medicine, tax cuts for the rich, eliminating government agencies, etc. The only new shtick is trade wars.

The majority of a minority support a single candidate. What effect does this information have on the aggregate of voters?
