I say Gavin Newsom for 2020--white male handsome compassionate charismatic YOUNG energetic

https://www.yahoo.com/news/californias-gavin-newsom-wants-lead-way-post-bernie-post-hillary-party-160041273.html

LOS ANGELES — On a recent Thursday afternoon, a long blue-and-white bus cut through L.A.’s glacial traffic, pivoted slowly into the Ladera Center strip mall and stopped in front of Stakely’s Barber Salon. “Gavin for Governor,” it said on the side. Moments later, Gavin Newsom, the former mayor of San Francisco, two-term lieutenant governor of California and current Democratic candidate for the state’s top job, descended the stairs in white shirtsleeves and a loosened navy tie and, though his cheeks seemed as smooth as the rest of him, sauntered inside for a shave.

In a few days, Newsom would learn that he had won the Golden State’s nonpartisan, top-two primary with 33 percent of the vote — no surprise, given that he’d led the crowded field in every poll taken since campaigning began. More consequential was the news that the other Democratic frontrunner, former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, had failed to secure the second spot in the general election, and that a little-known Republican venture capitalist from Illinois named John Cox had advanced instead.

JMHO and I'm so often wrong, but:
If we can't get the top slot with our color or gender, we should find the best male candidate including youngest in age and digital age savvy with a woman (not white) VP. We just have to appeal to more than ourselves -- older generations, progressives of all colors and races and ages.

MAGAts aren't going to go with any of us and we HAVE to win. I was in the room when Newsom walked in. He's a rock star with a heart and fresh name.

forward. There are a number of eminent Democrats running, and I'm confident at least one will rise above the others. This is ideally set up for a centrist Democrat, especially if Sanders runs.

52. I agree.

I am sick and tired of seeing white male Presidents regardless of party. There are a lot of women of color in the Democratic Party who are more than qualified to run for President and I think it is time to nominate one of them. I personally would like to see Kamala Harris or Maxine Waters as the Democratic Party's 2020 candidate for President.

2. We need to see how he manages California first, for a while. I say 2024 at earliest.

I like Newsom and he is a star in California Politics but I want to see how he handles the "big chair" before jumping off into trying to lead the nation. If he can keep California going the right way, then I will back him. I think he can and will, but I think a jump after only 2 years as governor would seem impulsive and like he didn't really want to be the governor of the state.

The MeToo movement has outed a lot of men for sexual misconduct.

And even some innocent ones have been caught up in it (Al Franken, for example). I don't know what to make of the Eric Schneiderman case, to be honest.

I say we go with the safe bet and NOMINATE A WOMAN!

Kamala Harris is my current fave.

We know about the men because they tend to be in positions of power more. Add to that men won't report being sexually harrassed as much out of embarrassment too.. though they should.

Don't use a broad brush assuming some women don't have the same kind of flaws some men do.

I do love Kamala too. She's tough as nails and smart!

31. Not the same.

McCaskill helped one Republican defeat another Republican, thereby basically choosing which Republican she'd run against in the general election.

Gavin Newsom helped a Republican get on the ballot in the general election instead of another Democrat.

A Dem was going to win the general election anyway. Now, Republicans who would have stayed home are going to come out and vote against Dems down-ballot. Because one Dem helped a Republican defeat other Dems.

So no, it's not the same thing.

32. Nothing similar

Clair McCaskill did it to demolish a Republican in a General Election

Newsom did it in a primary to move the Republican to the number 2 spot because he didn't want to run against a Democrat.

Why is that important? Because if there is an October surprise and some scandal comes out Newsom could lose and a Republican take over.

Impossible you say? Unlikely?

Newsom is a guy who had an affair with his best friend's wife, so yes it is possible.

41. Nothing to simmer down about, not critical of Claire, its Newsom who misbehaved.

Claire used it to pick the Republican for the General Election. Newsom used it to raise the Republican and eliminate the Democrat in the number two spot.

With California's jungle primary we had a chance to get two Democrats on the ballot, like we did on the Senate. If Senator Feinstein, god forbid, has a major medical event the other candidate, a Democrat would probably win, but in any case there would be NO chance for a Republican to win.

In the Governor's race a major medical event isn't possible but Newsom who slept with his best friend (and campaign manager's) wife could well have another scandal (like the AG of NY had, or he had last time) and then we would get Cox for Governor.

Newsom's move was widely condemned in California even among his own supporters.

Claire did it to harm Republican chances for a win, Newsom used it to improve Republicans chances for a win, thereby making it easier for him to run in the GE but creating, should he lose, that a Republican will win.

30. Its worse than that Effie. This is a guy who slept with his best friends wife

https://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/02/us/02newsom.html

Mr. Newsom said he had a short-term sexual relationship with Ruby Rippey-Tourk, the wife of Alex Tourk, who until Wednesday was running his re-election campaign.

The affair, first reported Thursday by The San Francisco Chronicle, apparently took place in late 2005 while Ms. Rippey-Tourk, 34, worked as Mr. Newsom’s appointments secretary, and while Mr. Newsom, 39, was in the throes of a divorce.

“Everything you’ve heard and read is true,” Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, told reporters who crammed into his office for a news conference. “And I am deeply sorry about that.”

He is deeply sorry and is "going to have to live with it" so there is that

But even some of Mr. Newsom’s political rivals said the affair was not likely to be a fatal blow to his re-election plans.

“His ratings are so high he could fall and still have a comfortable cushion,” said Tom Ammiano, a member of the Board of Supervisors who ran against Mr. Newsom in 2003.

White guy = affair OK, run for the President

POC guy = has an affair and he is finished. He probably can't even be divorced. In fact he will have to meet the Obama standard, which very few of us can.

I find that hard to believe. Maybe the fact that she was a rightwing, evil ass was not important to him because his own commitment to progressivism is only skin deep, or for show. I don't know, but it all concerns me. I trust true salt of the earth democrats who I have zero reservations about, I hope Newsom prove my concerns about him wrong as he serves as Cali governor.

67. I have concerns also.

Attacking democrats instead of trying to pull one onto the November ballot with him. I have a technologist friend that lives in Massachusetts, a deep blue state legislatively. She says some legislators run as Dems because that is easier than getting into office as a repugh, but their commitment to ethics in office is no better than a repugh, she mentioned a big influence peddling scandal that took down a top democrat there a few years back, sent him to prison. That democrat lived the high life and sold the public's trust in him to the highest bidder. The woman is a true bare-knuckles progressive, who was demoralized by the scandal. I have reservations about Newsom because I don't know whether his faith in progressivism is deep, or he does and says what will get and keep him in power.

immediately turn around and start running for president.

He can run in 2024 or 2028.

I am supporting a different Californian, Tom Steyer, for president in 2020.

49. What's the concern for being "realistic"...

when politics during past nearly two years has being nothing even resembling realistic?

There is nothing prohibiting or improper or unethical about him running for President after serving a year as Governor of CA. If enough people want him to run then I think he should run. He may be our best shot at winning back the WH.

64. I agree.

And THIS time, everyone who calls themselves a progressive must go to war to get her elected, and stop with the purity bullshit that some of them get into.

77. There is more than one kind of purity bullshit.

If Sarah fucking Palin declared herself a Democrat and ran for preznit would you support her against male candidates?

And would you then call yourself a progressive, 'cause wimen?

54. yes it is

now, if the best person runnign happens to be a white male (I personally wish Gore could coem back and claim the office that was stolen from him) then so be it, BUT, there are plenty of women (Liz Warren rings a bell?) and people pf color (Cory Booker) and others capable of doing the one thing that many democrats need to do, THROW PUNCHES! If America is going to demand a reality show slugfest, then let us give people who can throw a punch! Harris, Booker, Warren and oh yes Biden can do that.

What we do not need is to hire the same consultants that crashed the ship, I cannto say her name because of Tos, but I do not care what a fundraiser that person may be, but pretty much ruleout any Florida democrat as they have been the least competent in the party!

71. sorry but

I have seen my state blow two gubernatorial election and one senator election because certain people who got fired loved Charlie Crist, and were willing to kneecap Kendrick Meek. I hate the fact that we lost contests that we needed to win.

58. Choosing simply for gender and skin-color sounds like the dread "identity politics"

I will not push for a candidate that is male or white to appease deplorables or to "play it safe" as ANY candidate we choose deserves a helicopter ride in their eyes. We must support the best and brightest in our party and get out the vote to secure victory. Also, suggestion for a white-male candidate and implication that a white-male candidate is more viable sends a ghastly message of exclusion to women and people of color IMO.

62. Four points

1) If he wants to be taken seriously he needs not to just beat his Republican opponent here he needs to throttle him. Hillary beat Trump here by nearly 4,000,000 votes and thirty points. Hillary beat Trump here by a bigger percentage than Trump beat her in Alabama.

2) Coming from CA is a blessing and a curse. It has a motherlode of EC votes but it is already firmly in the Democratic column.

3) Too bad Jerry Brown isn't ten years younger.

4) A candidate's color, gender, or sexual orientation should be of no moment.

66. I don't think we should go out of our way to shun white male candidates, but ...

I don't think Gavin is ready yet for the big leagues.

I think he should serve a term or two as governor and then we'll see.

In the meantime, I think Kamala Harris is potentially our strongest candidate.
