Giuliani warns Mueller that Trump team has a Plan B and C if he doesn't end Russia probe.

President Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani has warned Robert Mueller that the Trump team will wage a campaign to end the Special Counsel’s Russia investigation on its one-year anniversary, with several plans up their sleeve.

Giuliani has taken a combative approach to the investigation since being brought on by the president last month. Having failed to bring a swift conclusion to the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign as he initially predicted, Giuliani said Tuesday that the legal team will step up their efforts leading up to the one-year anniversary of the investigation on Thursday.

“We are going to try as best we can to put the message out there that it has been a year, there has been no evidence presented of collusion or obstruction, and it is about time for them to end the investigation,” Giuliani told Bloomberg. “We don’t want to signal our action if this doesn’t work—we are going to hope they listen to us—but obviously we have a Plan B and C.”

7. This is exactly what I keep saying too...

Innocent people don't act like this. This 'should' be extremely obvious to any person who's paying attention to REALITY (not just Fox & other RW media propaganda) and has a decent IQ w/ a quasi functional BS meter. Sadly most, if not all three, seem to be lacking in too many people lately.

They're making it sound like a year is slow but, like everything else Republicans say, it.is.a.LIE. The fact is that Mueller's investigation has been moving along pretty fast compared to some of the big ones in the past.
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/mueller-is-moving-quickly-compared-to-past-special-counsel-investigations/

A this doesn't even go into the almost 2 year (and still threatening to open it back up as a distraction for Trump) harassment 'investigation' by Republicans into Benghazi.

36. Only for TIME. Otherwise, whoa! For instance, Whitewater

produced no indictments within the Clinton administration until Clinton himself stupidly leaped into a perjury trap when sandbagged with a question about Monica Lewinsky (which had nothing to do with Whitewater or any other legal malfeasance).

All other indictments on this graph are of mostly business people bundled by a crooked politically motivated investigation with Clinton as a smear. (The first special prosecutor was replaced with Starr when he found neither Clinton was involved in wrongdoing and was going to close. Starr did his best, casting that wide net and also interviewing every woman he could find who'd been associated with Clinton) but couldn't even manufacture a case that'd hold up, just long months of burning tires.)

This is from a 1998 CBS article:

Whitewater prosecutors cast such a wide net in Arkansas that they yielded a good-sized catch, even though the big fish seem to have gotten away. The prime quarry of investigators, who started work in 1994, were President Clinton and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Mr. Clinton was cleared of any wrongdoing by special prosecutor Kenneth Starr in November and Mrs. Clinton has not been charged.

Nevertheless, the investigation resulted in 14 convictions and two acquittals. (Described in this article.) The last six indictments, handed down in April, were dismissed by a judge in July.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/caught-in-the-whitewater-net/

Former Reagan VP GW Bush would have had several serious indictments during his administration because of involvements with Iran-Contra, but proactive pardons cut the links.

Don't know about all the others, but assume explanation might be needed there also.

41. Oh yes

Major differences. We've never seen anything quite like this before. The closest we've come was Watergate and that is looking pretty mild in comparison to this level of corruption. Everywhere we look, we see Treason and it is poorly disguised, as if they don't care if they get caught. I'm living in a constant state of shock and distress.

I remember Whitewater and that wide net they cast. Now that WAS a witch hunt. To this day, republicans have not stopped looking for something to pin on a Clinton. They are piss poor losers and even worse winners.

for months and a huge scandal all by itself is knocked aside by new ones. Shock and distress. We could never have imagined this moral collapse of almost the entire right, top to bottom.

Focus on what's good and not broken. It's every bit as real and is going to break them. I'm almost completely sure.

but I could never imagine how bad it would be and I didn't think so many republicans would cave to a vulgar corrupt reality TV star. Who would have thought it could be so easy?

Yes, I am confident that they will all go down and the system will prevail, but there will be a lot of damage and pain in the mean time. Also, it is important that THIS TIME people are held accountable. No "lets move forward" crap. If we are a nation of laws, then the lawbreakers have to be prosecuted. Otherwise, they just keep coming back to do it again, write books, star in their own TV shows, etc.

50. +1000 for the entire first paragraph.

For the second, agree and also just wish. We have to work with the population we have and their reactions. Some criminals will go to prison, but there are limits to how many can be punished and to what degree before counterreaction starts outweighing the societal benefits. History suggests many will escape justice entirely or serve sentences shorter than if they were 22-year-olds who'd stolen a case of beer.

Keep the eyes on the prize, though. We have a critical imperative to rebuild our old center. It included sympathizers of both parties who could work imperfectly together to create a stability within which prosperity and rights grew, and which stood strong against extremism from both sides. Obama believes that, and imo also that imperative has priority above almost everything. Perhaps with the enemies trying to use our electoral system to destroy our democracy I should say everything?

65. Oh, I know

not everyone will receive the justice they deserve and there will always be those who go on and prosper in spite of their sins, but the lack of accountability for the Bush years has had its repercussions. I rather understood at the time. People were exhausted and we were facing a financial meltdown. We had to focus on rebuilding, not revenge. What truly bothers me is there evidently are people who seem to be incapable of remorse. Given the opportunity, they will come back and create discord and chaos again and again. I've never been a fan of locking people up for nonviolent crimes, but what do you do with people who will not stop trying to destroy society. In my wildest imagination, I'm picturing a huge island "Escape from New York" like prison! Or a cold isolated country no one wants! Or an off planet space station!

I think I am most disappointed that a lot of old school republicans have not shown more spine. Though I disagree with them politically, I really thought most of them had a decent moral core and when faced with a true threat to democracy, they'd put petty politics aside and do the right thing. Most are showing, there is no core whatsoever and the rest are retiring. It appears the party must be completely dismantled and rebuilt or perhaps a new party will take its place. It is hard to predict, as I could never have predicted what is happening right now.

I am reassured that behind the scenes are many competent and focused people working within the justice system to save our democracy. They know so much more than we do and for now, they are unsung heroes. For all the Trumps, Cohens, and Manaforts, there are career prosecutors, agents, and government servants who will not compromise or give up.

Always good chatting with you!

66. +1000. I'm guessing we could and should prosecute

dozens and even hundreds of criminals without blowback once a fair proportion of conservatives turn on this administration. Conservatives believe in punishment as consequence and deterrence. I think jailing caring, well meaning Trump himself (and who else?) might go too far for the right, but presumably that'd depend on what was found?

I've never forgotten the lessons of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving campaign. Before then, people might deplore drunk drivers, but we all knew people who had and would and they were invited to parties anyway. It was common to try to talk them out of driving home but, when not "too" influenced and not living too far, telling them to be careful and waving them off with indulgent shrugs. They were friends, not criminals. Then MADD got laws changed, drunks went to jail and even prison, and the smiling tolerance turned into purse-lip disapproval of criminals. New definition.

As for that moral core (electing a multiple drunk driver, W, after MADD comes to mind), I've gone through the same thing and spent years thinking they'd finally do the right thing. It finally drove me to books to find out what was going on.

Turns out conflicting beliefs can exist right alongside each other, but in separate compartments so they don't clash. This is more prevalent in conservatives than liberals and becomes very strong in some types of conservatives, like loyal trumpsters. Ben Carson.

I do believe there's been a 40-year campaign to replace right-wing political beliefs in both traditional conservatism and the old political morality, already a weak kiss-up/kick-down version, that went with it, and to replace both with a mindless ultrapartisanship that could be directed to serve whatever the leaders want.

Traditional political conservatism had to be driven out of politics because, as Lincoln said, highlighting its most positive defining aspect, “What is conservatism? Is it not the adherence to the old and tried against the new and untried?” That obviously wouldn't work for wannabe kleptocrats seeking to corrupt our government to serve them. And with this we lost our big allies against extremism. Politically, most Republican voters have been turned to serve what were once seen as unacceptable and invalid off-the-cliff ideas. But they have no idea.

Don't want to leave on a bad note, but apparently right wing media have been booming and the numbers of searches for news from right wing media, including new media outlets, have exploded shockingly in numbers. In their enormous battle for power, I suspect wealthy archconservatives have a lot to do with this as they continue their efforts to use our elections to defeat us.

On the plus side, voters are clearly engaged and looking for information about what's happening.

Have a nice day.

67. That was an excellent analogy

I remember those days and pretty much everyone drank and usually drank away from home. As a rule, they were not bad people, but the consequences for drunk driving were pretty insignificant and some people really need life altering deterrents.

I remember my father's republican party of the 1950s and though, I disagree with their anti union, less government stands, they were a more intelligent, articulate party than what we see today. Many were true believers. My father was until Nixon and he felt terribly betrayed. Nixon had been preceded by Governor Stratton of Illinois and my father started to see political corruption pretty much everywhere on the left and the right. Though he continued to vote throughout his life, he never got involved again and didn't talk about it. Dad was a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington type and his heroes cost him his idealism, as well as a really good job government job.

What I see now in the republican party is not any political agenda or ideology, it is about money and corporate greed. Republicans can rewrite ideology to fit the needs of their overlords and their own personal financial needs. They hire spin doctors and dirty tricksters to achieve their goals. The objective is to win at any cost, the ends justify the means, even if it means losing your soul in the process. It rather boggles the mind. Is there anything too low, any lie too outrageous, any corruption too heinous for these people? They aren't Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life. They appear somewhat normal and most seem to love their families. I suppose it is the age old Devil's bargain and once you go so far, there is no turning back.

Right now, I think we are on the verge of a real revolution and it could be the only way we will survive all this. Cleansing can be very messy.

8. IMO, this isn't really about ending the probe.

They know they can't.

This is about shoring up support with the base to blunt the effects of the reports when they come.

They probably know that Mueller will not attempt to indict Trump, so it comes down to the political process of impeachment. If they can convince enough for the Republicans that this is a political witch hunt, then they can get support out to the polls in November, and prevent any GOP Senators from supporting conviction.

The thing is, I think that plan will likely work.

The question is, will the REST of us hold the Republicans accountable for their flagrant disregard for the rule of law.

63. People need to accept that

The chances of 45 meeting justice while living at 1600 Pennsylvania are very small.

The only thing we can do is control what we can control which is the elections. Do our jobs and November to put Republicans out of control and Congress, to be able to have actual legislative branch oversight over the criminal operation for the next 2 years, and then saddle up and vote the f*** her out in 2020.

Then, he'll be fair game.

Check out 18 USC Section 875 and 876. Threatening government officials of the United States is a Class C or D felony, usually carrying maximum penalties of 5 or 10 years, and is investigated by the FBI. When a threat is made against a judge, it can be considered obstruction of justice.

If nothing else, Giuliani's whole, "stop investigating us.............OR ELSE!!!" looks ineffectual and weak. Giuliani might be the worst lawyer in the history of the legal profession.

I also love how it’s a Republican running the investigation who was appointed by a republican that was appointed by trump!
