How hard would it be to block ads for Confederate flags from the DU homepage?

I realize the site needs money just like any site does, but it’s disturbing how often homepage ads are anywhere from mildly to wildly offensive on a site that is and wants to continue to be the internet’s largest forum for Democrats.

We don't all see the same stuff - your ads are based on your browsing habits.

Republican campaign ads, gun ads... Most certainly not based on my browsing history. The ad algorithm picks up keywords in the DU discussions.

I never visit Foxnews or any right wing site. I have never seen ads for anything you described. JCPenney ads, yes. Book sellers, yes. Shoe stores, yes.

The ads are definitely tailored toward your browsing history.

There is a Harley banner on my screen.

It is most certainly not tailored to your browser history.

About Harley Davidson going to Thailand? That could account for it.

Read a story on here about gun control, you will see an NRA ad. My favorite was seeing a Krispy Kreme donut ad in a thread about Chris Christy, where someone called him Krispy Kreme Kristy.

If you don't like online donations you can even send a check by snail mail.

Otherwise, you get whatever the ad gods send, including Confederate flags.

You may have accidentally clicked on a link for the sale of that shit. Now you get targeted when you come to this site.

I don’t think DU is necessarily buying those ads because now the companies target the people who visit their sites. I don’t really know though.

Your donation is good for a year but you’ll probably want to renew it to get those ads off the site!

So something must have triggered it.

Could be your browsing history. Could be your email, if you use gmail or anything running on Googles systems. Could be any of many things.

But it’s there because something you did have Google the idea that the ad would be properly targeted at you.

that's the problem; those programs bring in the ads due to seeing the words there - they don't analyze positive vs. negative mentions.
