Woman dies after being beaten in Oakland


(08-01) 13:15 PDT OAKLAND -- A woman found badly beaten near Oakland's Lake Merritt has died in what police said Wednesday appears to be a case of domestic violence.

A suspect is in custody, said Officer Johnna Watson, an Oakland police spokeswomans.

The names of the victim and suspect were not released.

A jogger found the victim on the 1500 block of Lakeside Drive, on the western edge of Lake Merritt, about 6:10 a.m. Tuesday. She had suffered head injuries and was covered in blood, Watson said. She later died at Highland Hospital in Oakland.

Officers arrested the suspect at the scene. He was also covered in blood, police said.
