Golf course that called the police on black women loses business, faces call for state investigatio
In the days after white golf course owners called the police on five African-American women they said were not playing fast enough, a Pennsylvania state senator has called for an investigation into the incident and the club is losing local business.
On April 21, the women were told by owners and employees of the Grandview Golf Course in York County, Pennsylvania, that they were taking too long. The club offered to refund their memberships and then called 911.
Video footage taken by one of the women shows the club's owner, Jordan Chronister, saying he had been timing the women. He interrupts them in a mocking tone and tells the women to leave before the police arrived. The police have said that once officers arrived at the course, it was clear that law enforcement did not need to be involved.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, along with the state's Human Relations Commission and the Governor's Advisory Commission on African American Affairs, issued a statement Thursday condemning racial discrimination in public places, including the arrests of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks and the incident at Grandview.
"We urge business managers and owners to reflect upon the treatment of individuals who seek to patronize your businesses," the statement read.

(81,432 posts)Chief: Police were called to Grandview Golf Course twice
David Weissman, 717-505-5431/@DispatchDavid Published 1:59 p.m. ET April 27, 2018 | Updated 2:33 p.m. ET April 27, 2018
When police were called to Grandview Golf Course after a heated exchange between a group of black women members and management, that was actually the second time police were called to the club that day.
Northern York County Regional Police Chief Mark Bentzel confirmed that Steve Chronister, former county commissioner and an adviser to ownership at the club, had summoned police to the club earlier on Saturday, April 21, saying the women were playing too slowly and delaying other golfers.
When police arrived, Chronister told them the women had picked up their pace, and there was no need to talk to them further, Bentzel said.
The police were called again after the women were asked to leave before teeing off on hole 10. Part of that exchange was captured in a video that has helped the incident go viral, with celebrities and national media outlets sharing the footage.

This is about the despicable behavior of these particular owners. We know other players would have played through. I'm glad are getting this blowback so far. Since they won't fire themselves, good that some customers are firing the course and the state is investigating.

(64,988 posts)I am notoriously fast on the course. People can clearly see that and routinely ASK US to go through. (My pals are fast players too, as in threesome in about 160 minutes)
But I have never, ever asked to play through. I'm not sure that's within etiquette.

(16,858 posts)Whenever I've been in groups of four or more...but I've never personally ask a group to "play through", even when I'm playing by myself and I'm forced to wait on a group...such is golf and the slow pace is part of the reason I play, not to rush through 9 or 18. Agree that I'm not sure what the proper etiquette would be, would love to know!
ProfessorGAC
(64,988 posts)Etiquette says people in front of a faster group should ask them to play through, but asking the group in front, no matter how slow, is a no-no.
I have, however, asked staff to encourage a VERY slow group to let us through.
There's a sign at a course south of here, I always liked.
It said: "Your place is directly behind the group in front of you, not directly in front of the group behind you."

(16,858 posts)Letting a faster group move ahead is exactly what my dad taught me, as well as never asking to move ahead of a slower group...you take a break and enjoy the scenery.

(44,228 posts)I've played hundreds of rounds of golf. I learned golf etiquette at my grandfathers knee, as a young junior golfer. I'm always aware if we're being pressed by the group behind us, or if the group in front of us is opening a gap between us and them. My dad and I play ready golf as a matter of course. Almost without fail, we'll wave up on a par 3 to keep everyone moving. I've ingrained these courtesies in my own kids, as they play with their grandfather and me.
I'll always ask a faster group if they'd like to play through, as long as there's somewhere for them to go. It's pointless, if groups are stacked ahead of us, with no gaps.
That said, it's been my experience that mid-day weekend golf is notoriously slow. If I book a tee time at noon on a Saturday, I go with the full knowledge that I'm probably out there for 5 hours or longer. There's no point in getting angry about slow play weekend afternoons. I go and enjoy the time spent outdoors.
I'd hazard a guess that when you and your group are getting through a round in under 3 hrs, you're teeing off early morning, before many of the more casual golfers are hitting the links.

(14,530 posts)and continued. The golf pro told the ladies the were ok. As they were keeping pace with the golfers in front of them. If the ladies let them proceed they weren't going to be able to go any faster.
This is nothing more than a group of privileged white men who didn't want to play behind black women.

(22,025 posts)The golf course management was complaining about slow play but they sent a group out as a five-some?
Perhaps I'm missing something in the story.
ETA: My golf guru once told me, "If you're in a hurry, don't play golf."
Never saw a fivesome That's why the slow play. Who let them out? Blame the starter, not the players

(22,025 posts)I appreciate your taking the time, BumRushDaShow.
I had read about this occurrence but this latest post had a new element to the story. Namely, that there were five women.
Do you play golf? Generally, a "group" is made up of from 1 to 4 players. It's highly unusual to have a group of 5 because it slows down the pace of play. This was the (fake) issue that was raised by the bigots who confronted the women golfers.
So, my point was more of a question for the golf course: Why send out groups of 5 if you're concerned about the pace of play?
The story raises other questions, as well. Is this the first time these women were confronted? Does the club have other instances of similar problems? Do the jackasses playing behind the women face any consequences for their lack of etiquette and manners?

(128,748 posts)but have friends who do.
However given they are part of their own personal club and based on the weather, where the season is really just getting started, I expect that most times, they normally don't have as many at one time during a season.
But here is the thing, weather-wise (from an article I just found) -
After completing their second hole, Ojo and another woman in the group, Karen Crosby, said they were approached by Steve Chronister, who told them he was the owner of the club and that the women needed "to keep up the pace of play." "He was extremely hostile," Ojo told the York Daily Record. JJ Chronister said her father-in-law, Steve, is not an owner of the club but instead serves in an advisory capacity.
Also at the second hole, another woman in the group, Sandra Harrison, talked with a golf course pro who said the women were keeping a fine pace.

So right there, they were an hour behind due to conditions and that would have bumped them against people scheduled for later tee times. However to claim they were "playing too slow" and calling the cops and other nonsense, is why this 1-hour delay at the beginning is even more critical to take into account.
PJMcK
(22,025 posts)If there was a frost delay, then all of the reserved groups would normally be bumped back an hour. Accordingly, Chronister's group would have been delayed as well. From experience, I can say that that group (which appears to be a 4-some) would be in an impatient mood.
One ugliness I've found in golf is the level of misogyny among many of the men players. There's even an acronym: GOLF = Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. It's stupid and repulsive. Actually, if I've gone to a course alone, I'd prefer to play with women because they aren't so full of testosterone that they forget they aren't on the PGA Tour.
This story sucks. I wish those ladies well and hope they hit 'em straight.

I just had too many other hobbies (and at the time played tennis & badminton) so never really got into it as a hobby (and it would have been a somewhat expensive one at that). But it's not like the LPGA hasn't been around for almost 70 years either.

(44,228 posts)I used to play in a Canada Day tournament every year. It was a 4 man scramble, but we'd play 2 groups together. We'd go out as an eight-some
Yes, we were out there for 6 hours, but the team vs team aspect within the group was great fun. The trash-talk would flow rapidly and freely, with seemingly endless competitions for who had to buy the next round of on-course refreshments, finishing with who held bragging rights until the tournament the following year.
