Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsOn Friday a 19 year old fired a shotgun in a high school near where I live.
One person was injured, not life threatening. The 19 year has a history of mental issues and bought the gun just after the Parkland shootings via a private sale, no checks of any sort. Fortunately, after the first shot, he stopped and surrendered to one of his former teachers.
Damned insane that someone like that can come near a gun. Fortunately he didn't have an assault weapon.

(31,261 posts)I can't imagine what is going through their head, one of what should be a very safe place isn't. BTW, the kid told police that questioned him that he wanted to shoot up a church, but selected a school because it was easier to find. Total nut that should have NEVER gotten hold of a gun.

(17,984 posts)my initial response was that he did it in protest of the walk out. I've been wondering about this ever since. Maybe more info will be available on Monday.

(31,261 posts)He was Baker Acted at 14 and refused entry into the Marines because of his history of mental problems.
He told authorities that he was going to shoot up a church, but chose the school because that was more convenient.
The local papers have heartbreaking photos of desks and file cabinets being piled in front of doors as teachers and students sought to prevent the gunman from entering classrooms. From the stuff spread all around the floor, one gets a sense of the utter chaos and fear that must have been present when teachers and students barricaded classrooms.
The most enraging thing of all is the gunman bought the gun without a single check on him.

In reality, taking guns away is what would make us all safer. Personally, I'm tired of all the excuses for why guns shouldn't be restricted. Look at Australia. After a mass shooting they took guns away and -- gasp! They haven't had a mass shooting since! How in the world is that possible? Could it be that having guns leads to shootings? Do you think?
