at any kind of event was considered an honor. Now it's a blight and an insult. This president isn't a much-wanted guest; he's the skunk at the picnic.

As a poster down - thread mentioned, she looked genuinely happy to be around people who respected her and treated her as a human being (Barack in the photo, but I'm sure Michelle as well)...gives me some hope for, I suppose...

Sitting Presidents generally don’t attend the funerals of First Ladies. Now, granted, the orange shit-gibbon probably hasn’t thought it through this way, but that’s the way it is.

That being said, Newt Gingrich and right wing media in general raked Obama over the coals for not going to Nancy Reagan’s funeral, but I’m sure they’ll take trump to task also...

It was a beautiful service. I did not agree with most of the politics of the family, but I did and do appreciate their obvious love and cohesion as a family. I once heard Barbara Bush speak when I lived in New York, and she was a fabulous speaker—down to eath and able to connect with people. I’ve been listening to some of the post-service comments, and have been hearing a lot about this being an end of an era—not because of the people and traditions involved but because the presidency and politics itself have been turned into institutions occupied by crass, uncivil, greedy, corrupt individuals who do nothing good for anyone but themselves. In contrast, the words I heard about Barbara Bush and her family were gracious, inspiring, humorous, loving, honest, smart, caring, and religious. The only words that come to mind in describing the entire Trump family are greedy, corrupt, crass, uncaring, ignorant, dishonest, hateful, mean spirited, racist, and fakely religious. Our nation is suffering greatly for the loss of morality, honesty, and civility in the president and Congressinal leadership. I don’t know that we can ever recover the ideals that made the country truly great.

He was brought up with wealth, but never fit in with the other scions of wealth because his family were more hustlers than anything else. He has always tried to buy his way in to "society" but his sense of what that is appears warped, hence the chasing after celebrities, the gaudy gold and conspicuous displays of wealth and fame. As his businesses failed one after another, he had to keep up the appearance of success which drove him further and further into the realm of gangsters and oligarchs from Russia. Seems like most of those guys have a similar concept of wealth (with their cheetahs as pets, their dozens of high end cars, etc...) except that they are actually wealthy unlike Trump who while rich, isn't in their league.

In contrast, you have the Bush's who while the sons are both disappointments, GHW Bush and his father have enduring legacies and are established old money "Mayflower Compact" type people. Then you have the Obama's who earned their recently acquired wealth but who have shown nothing but grace, class, and composure throughout their public lives like they just came by it naturally.

It goes to show that while money can buy a lot of things, it cannot buy you a soul and it can't buy you class.
