San Antonio Mayro Julian Castro will deliver Dem Convention Keynote Address

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, who was jokingly mistaken for a White House intern by Barack Obama less than three years ago, will deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention that will nominate the president for a second term.

Castro will speak in prime time on Sept. 4, the first night of the convention in Charlotte, N.C. First lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to deliver remarks the same night.

The appearance, announced this morning in a video released to the television network Univision, puts Castro in the company of Texas Democrats like Gov. Ann Richards, who was state treasurer when she delivered her keynote in 1988, and Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, who was awarded the prime speaking role in 1976 and 1992.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will be the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., in September — a clear sign of the importance of the Hispanic vote to President Obama’s re-election math this November.
The Convention Committee and Obama’s campaign jointly announced on Tuesday morning that the 37-year-old Castro will speak on the convention’s opening night, Sept. 4. First Lady Michelle Obama will also speak on opening night, Democrats announced. ....


In 2008, Obama took 67 percent of the Hispanic vote to just 31 percent for Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Castro is something of a rising star in Democratic politics. He’s young, telegenic and comes from humble roots (he was raised by a single mother and, like Obama, went on to receive a degree from Harvard Law School).

Castro’s family is no stranger to politics. His twin brother, Joaquin Castro, is a state legislator running for Congress (and heavily favored to win) in Texas’s 20th District.

In early December, Julián Castro, the newly elected mayor of San Antonio, visited the White House to attend President Obama’s national jobs-and-economic-growth forum. Castro was one of only five mayors in attendance and, at 35, the youngest. When his turn came to speak — the subject was the creation of green jobs — the president looked at him, midway down the long conference table, and said: “I thought he was on our staff. I thought he was an intern. This guy’s a mayor?” The other participants — world-famous economists, environmentalists and politicians — burst into laughter.


“Of San Antonio, Tex.,” Castro said evenly.

Obama grinned. “I’m messing with you,” he said. “I know who you are.”

Castro was neither flustered nor flattered by the president’s bantering familiarity. Of course Obama knew who he was — gate-crashers might make it into White House social events, but they don’t get to the table of high-level West Wing policy meetings led by the president himself. Castro smiled politely at Obama’s jest and then proceeded to the business at hand, delivering prepared remarks about employment and the energy market in San Antonio. He is cerebral, serious, self-contained and highly efficient. If he were an energy source, he’d be zero-emission. A video of the event shows the president listening intently to Castro’s presentation and nodding occasionally, Harvard Law ’91 silently encouraging Harvard Law ’00.

he was the keynote speaker at the Texas Democratic Party Convention as well.

He's an up-and-comer, not unlike Illinois State Senator Barack Obama in 2004.

8. The wooing of hispanics continues

It will be interesting to see how this all turns out. The battle will be over effective turnout- hispanics have the numbers to flip several states, but voter suppression and general apathy will work against that.


I'll bet the repubs spotlight Rubio to counter.

Met his brother Juaquin at one of my conferences. We invited him and 3 republicans to receive awards for their work in the TX lege regarding funding relevant to my non-profit. Guess who was the only one to show up?
