Trump tariff backlash causes panic in rural America as mega jobs losses appear on the horizon

Jen Hayden at Daily Kos

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/4/3/1754073/-Trump-tariff-backlash-causes-panic-in-rural-America-as-mega-jobs-losses-appear-on-the-horizon

"SNIP..........

Bottom line? Many of the heaviest losses will run right through Trump country.

The Brookings analysis — which is based on proprietary EMSI and Bureau of Labor Statistics data — shows that the largest sum of vulnerable jobs is in fruit and nut farming, with the majority concentrated in Trump counties. Most of the jobs in hog and pig farming and pipe production are also concentrated in Trump country. It’s only in wineries where Clinton counties have the most jobs.

CNN’s Erin Burnett spoke to a farmer who said if Trump didn’t reverse the tariff decision, he’d be voting differently in the future:

Erin Burnett

@ErinBurnett
Trump voter and Iowa hog farmer Tim Schmidt tells me Chinese tariffs will cost him $35k/year. 3,700 jobs at risk in his county alone. If tariffs don’t change, says his vote at risk.

Iowa isn’t the only state that will be hard hit by Trump’s trade war. As noted in the Washington Post, the impact will be felt in rural communities nationwide.

have had it pretty good no matter who was in office so many of them have to be racist scum. And maybe they will have more sympathy for the poor if they experience it. I was poor as a young woman...I mean almost starving poor...l had food stamps but it wasn't enough. I hate potatoes, oatmeal and especially spaghetti to this day. I had Grandma's depression recipes so I never went truly hungry and my kid was fed probably better than other kids as she didn't get junk food. It was miserable though. And at the end of the month I was really low on food. It changed the way I thought about things. In fact I swallowed my pride and told my parents the truth and went home..being the best parents on earth, they took me back and sent me to college. I was lucky to have parents who could afford this and who believed in second chances.

The thought of a female President coming after a Black President scared the bejesus out of them.

They hated Muslims, Trump hated Muslims, so anything else Trump said flew over their heads.

Honestly, I am sure of one thing. If those people go bankrupt, the economically vibrant places in the country will hardly notice if republicans in Washington do not try to bail out their base. Products flow to money, if cities can't get pork from a bankrupt Iowa pig farmer, ones from blue states near them will fill the void.
