The proposal to reauthorize the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program would subject more enrollees to work requirements, and would require states to set up training programs for 3 to 5 million people who might be unable to find suitable private sector work. Such programs currently serve 700,000 SNAP recipients.

A spokesperson for House Agriculture Committee Chairman Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), whos been holding hearings on overhauling food stamps since 2015 and is the author of the bill, did not immediately confirm or deny the details of the legislation.
Conaway has said in recent weeks that his SNAP overhaul wouldnt reduce federal spending on the program. According to the Democratic summary, the billions of dollars in cuts to food benefits would be used to create state bureaucracies.
Democrats say the work requirements proposal could potentially deny benefits to 3 percent of enrollees in 2027. According to Congressional Budget Office enrollment projections, that would amount to nearly 1 million people that year.

(51,584 posts)The GOP was planning on giving recipients expensive Blue Apron type boxes of prepared food instead of actual "money that could be wasted on something other than food". The bill stopped that idea and is one of the things in the bill that the Dems are happy about and is making Ann Coulter have a very bad, terrible, horrible day".

(82,849 posts)How about funding public schools at a level where the teachers are well-paid with small class sizes, the school buildings are outfitted with state-of-the-art facilities (other than the football field), and the students live in decent housing and get proper nutrition? I'll bet we'd see salutary results almost immediately, and the long-term benefits of healthy, well-educated citizens would serve the country for generations to come.
