He said it will help him rally his base. What about the other 3/5 to 2/3 of Americans ?

(59,501 posts)party hostage and the Republican party holds the power in both houses of Congress. Though only 30 percent or slightly more of the whole population, that translates to something like 60% plus of the Republican party. This means that all Republicans now face a Hobson's choice -- to possibly lose a primary if they stand up to Trump or to lose the general election if they don't.
So, far the first possibility weighs most heavilly on them - so they bet on Trump's popularity improving. If Trump becomes less popular or stays as unpopular as he is, we may see more jumping ship hoping to save their own job. Until either many of them do that OR they don't and we win very big in 2018, the country is held hostage by these people.

(51,583 posts)As soon as you relax and think it is "in the bag" you're pretty much screwed. We will have to fight (and fight dirty if we have to) and campaign like mad right up until the polls close on midterm night.

(3,405 posts)Their politics have never been burnished by critical thinking. Facts and evidence don't matter. If they are willing to believe that Obama is Kenyan, and Michelle is transgender, nothing presented by the Justice Department will make a dent.
These people operate from the limbic system. Their cerebral cortex stopped functioning when a negro got elected.

(15,316 posts)criminality and corruption to Bill Clinton getting a blowjob.
This is a perfect example of how they normalize this shit.
They pulled this bullshit during the 2016 campaign. Most obvious was the time I heard them talking about Iraq policy.
They talked about Clinton's plan to strengthen cooperation with allies, build an international coalition and streamline the training of Iraqi security forces. Then they talked about Donnie Shit for Brains plan to "steal their fucking oil".
They pretended that they were both plans that deserved "serious" contemplation... NOT one plan that was viable, and another that was a fucking war crime.
Fuck their normalizing shit!!!

(2,434 posts)as it is in so many things. Kornacki's point was that if the report comes from Mueller and it is damaging to Cheeto and it comes anywhere near the midterms, that could energize his base to keep from electing Dems so he does not get impeached. Right now they are not energized, A bad report w/ Cheeto screaming about the unfairness could get them off their butts for midterms.

(99,710 posts)That doesn't even pass the laugh test.
OldHippieChick
(2,434 posts)conclusion of his point, but I don't think that's what he meant. If Mueller makes no decision regarding Cheeto before the midterms, Cheeto will just be screaming what he's been screaming all along. If Mueller makes a decision to recommend impeachment early this summer, that may have little to no affect on his minions. If, however, Mueller recommends impeachment in Sept or Oct, that could very well incentivize his base and get them to he polls.

(3,666 posts)He KNOWS and the Republican party KNOWS that they cannot possibly convince a majority of Americans to vote their side of things, not while they are the party of Trump. But they also now that the anti-majoritarian features of our electoral system can keep them in power even without majority support. 50% of the Senate can be elected by the votes of just 8% of the electorate. Under the old Pennsylvania congressional map, the Democrats beat the Republicans by over 100K votes state-wide, but took only 5 out of the 18 House Seats. Of course, the new map will shift the balance back to the Dems. But repeat the Pennsylvania gerrymander nation wide in state after state. Some calculate the Republicans have a built in advantage of 7.5% in the House. Finally, it is possible .. though not likely .. for a party to win the Presidency with only 23% of the popular vote in a two party race. That's not going to happen. But with enough voter suppression in the right places, a well-distrusted 40% of the vote is plenty to win the re-election by dint of winning the EC but losing the popular vote. this time around, Trump and his evil minions and masters will pour every thing they can into winning the EC without even the pretense of seeing a broad popular mandate.
