(29,149 posts)The first thread originally had just the spoiler in the subject line. Then, as he continued posting such spoiler threads, there was a bit of a backlash. Then he went back and edited the initial thread to add "Spoiler Alert" but without removing the spoiler.

I don't care about the Olympics but it's obvious many others here do. It's just common courtesy to not post spoilers.

(8,646 posts)however, so are the baby tantrums over the one thread that popped up earlier. Sometimes people get exited and maybe didn't know. I personally think that if seeing a spoiler is going to send you off the edge, then maybe you need a break from the internets until you see your DVR'd beloved event, YK?
SidDithers
(44,228 posts)the poster posted 6 threads with results in the subject line. 2 were hidden by jury, and the poster has now self-deleted the other 4. That is why people are so pissed off, because it absolutely was a deliberate act designed to disrupt the board.

(15,189 posts)Of a sporting event before those who want to see without knowing who won. I'm not watching the Olympics, but I can't believe that people think it's ok to tell others who won when they haven't even seen it yet.
The spoiler is like the posts that describe animal cruelty in the subject. Even though you didn't click it, you have that image in your head. Not cool at all. I know animal cruelty happens, but I don't want to read about it, unless there is something we could all do to help.
SidDithers
(44,228 posts)means that those results will be visible to everyone on the GD Home Page. That's posting a spoiler in the subject.
The commonly accepted way to do it is to post a Subject Line like "100m Freestyle swimming results. **Spoiler Alert**", and then put the actual results in the body of the post.
That way, you actually have to click onto the thread to see the information inside the thread. And you have the option of not clicking on the thread if you don't want to know the results.
It's common courtesy to do it that way. It's absolutely assholish behaviour to deliberately post the results where everyone will see them.

(34,582 posts)but what gets me about this is for the first time someone who I have never seen swear does so in that post. Hell, you would think the swearing would have started during the primaries with the influx of newbs during Operation Chaos. Or the many time the congressional democrats bent over for the republicans. I don't like people spoiling things either, but if I am going to cuss someone out, I am going to save it for assholes that vote against womens' rights, or vote to cut food stamp spending, or vote against the countless things that democrats are supposed to stand for.
Now, I will go piss off

(23,926 posts)I never participated in college sports, because before I ever got to college I had more than a few pieces of my tender young ass perforated by some frag, and a few AK-47 rounds. The GI Bill let me go on to the University of North Carolina, but any hopes of being an NCAA athlete were pretty much out the window.
It's interesting that you mention kayaking and canoeing. My family will be gathering at our camp in Maine next week, and those activities are high on our agenda. We will also be climbing Sugarloaf and Cadillac Mountain.
But I guess my main objection to your post (aside from your gratuitous and ill-informed attempt to label all those who enjoy watching the Olympics as "armchair athletes" , is the incredibly foolish attempt to belittle American Olympians ... (oops, I mean "these people" .

Really, if people come to the "Information Superhighway" and stand in the middle of the road, they may get run over. If they don't really want to know, just wait for the TV feed. The advertisers will be grateful.

(18,219 posts)People are asked to post results in the body of the text instead of the subject of the OP, where everyone sees it even if they don't want to know the winners yet.
I don't watch any sports, and don't care about them, but I also understand that there are people who have different interests than I do, and they want to have some suspense when they watch on a delay.
Stop all the outrage!

(12,754 posts)I think it's not polite to post spoilers, but anyone who doesn't want to see results of Olympic events should probably stay off the INFORMATION freaking SUPERHIGHWAY.
The main problem is that the networks don't show the events in real time, while the online news outlets have the results as they happen. So, if you go online at all, you're taking a chance you're going to see the result somewhere.

(11,816 posts)I understand the OP is about someone being a dick and deliberately spoiling prime time stuff.
Here's my question: i NBC broadcasts all of a "minor" sport during the day - I'm thinking archery, including the medal ceremony - can you comment on it? How do you know if it's going to be part of their prime time coverage?
Or is it just safer to post "how bout them archers?" or "did anyone else watch archery this morning?"
ohheckyeah
(9,314 posts)use the title Archery - Possible Spoiler.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)Just don't give away the result in the _subject_ of your post.
Good subject: Today's Men's Team Archery
Bad subject: The (country) Archery team wins gold!!
If someone doesn't want to have the result spoiled, that 2nd subject will ruin it for them just by looking at the forum.
But in the body of your post, say all you want. People who don't want the result spoiled won't click on the post, and so won't read the body.
