LPS students [ Lincoln, NE] join national movement for gun control with planned walkouts

It’s Valentine’s Day and shots scream out from an AR-15 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The bullets leave in their path blood and bodies that can be seen lying in classrooms and littering hallways. When the calamity ends, 17 students are dead and 15 are left wounded.

The shooting, spanning just five minutes, is one of the deadliest school shootings in the United States and is another example of recurring gun violence in schools nationwide. Almost immediately following the shooting, familiar cries for gun control engulfed the country.

But this time, the rage, aimed at government inaction in enacting significant gun control legislation, originated from the country’s youth, the ripples of which have reached students in Lincoln.

Students in at least four Lincoln high schools have walkouts planned for April 20, with hopes to contribute to and harness the power of this youth crusade to finally achieve significant changes in gun control policy.
