Just read another article about how much people are suffering there, how hard it is for the kids, how many are not surviving.
If anybody here knows of some good groups to help, please share.
Syria, same.

(46,318 posts)It would mean admitting their big "experiment" in Bolivaran revolution is a total fiasco.
And Maduro is absolutely incompetent and a dictator.

I knew a girl who grew up there whose father worked for an oil company. Thats all the contact Ive ever had with any human beings from there. Certainly not typical.

My husband and I give to Syrian Medical Society - but how little can this do in the face of what is going on? I want them to be safe, to have a home that won't be bombed, to have food.

(34,136 posts)Usually shortened to NGOs.
Non-American because then they will not be hobbled by stupid crap such as not allowing any money to go to groups that provide abortion and birth control to women - often called the Mexico City Policy. https://www.kff.org/global-health-policy/issue-brief/what-is-the-scope-of-the-mexico-city-policy-assessing-abortion-laws-in-countries-that-receive-u-s-global-health-assistance/
And who knows what other idiotic policies have been and will be put into effect by this insane administration? So I would avoid giving money to any group that takes money from the US government or works under their auspices.
I wish I were in touch with my niece that works for NGOs. Currently she is in Baghdad, working with a Danish NGO so it's hard to keep up with her. She would have some good, specific suggestions, I am sure.

(10,839 posts)Maduro is certainly helping more Venezuelan BE poor, that's for sure.
In 2015, Venezuela had over 100% inflation the highest in the world and the highest in the country's history at that time. The rate increased to 4,000% in 2017 with Venezuela spiraling into hyperinflation while the population poverty rate was between 76% and 87% according to independent sources.
"Venezuelans lose average of 19lb in weight due to nationwide food shortages"
I guess the whole country is on a diet?

there's UNICEF and UNHCR. They both have done a lot to set up camps for Syrian and other refugees and deliver relief. I don't know how much work they do in Venezuela or South/Central America.
UNICEF currently has a 5x match on donations:

(3,181 posts)I have many Venezuelan acquaintances in the US and abroad, and they all have shown me how their own families are suffering there. The ones here vote Democratic, so don't assume they are right wing.
