Senator Brian Schatz from Hawaii tweeted:

"I am normally interested in compromise. Not this time. I cannot imagine a bill that would make a difference that the NRA supports. We don't need to cut a deal with them, we need to beat them!"

I agree with him. The NRA has drawn a line and there is no compromise anywhere, so evident at CPAC

16. And this handgun, locked away, will do what?

Is a teacher with a handgun going to charge a shooter with a gun shooting hundreds of rounds?

6. Oh god yes! Sen Schatz is

former Gov Neil Abercrombie's legacy to us.

He appointed him to fill in Sen Daniel Inouye's seat when he passed on.. and then won the special election and was reelected in 2016.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Schatz

He's a sweetie.. afaik he didn't pile on Sen Franklin, either. I know you're probably not suppose to talk about our senators that way.. but here I am.

Mahalo to you for his Tweet, FM!

15. would you consider a 2 for 1 swap?

I don't know a thing about him except that wikipedia entry, but I'd be willing to swap both my senators for him.

Actually, if you could spare some small mammal or cuddly insect, I'd trade both McConnell and Paul.

It ain't fair.

28. Fun fact from Germany:

Schatz is German for treasure and is also used far and wide as term of endearment. My son calls his fianceé "Schatz".

3. Well said...

The NRA has repeatedly, over the last two decades refused to compromise on anything gun-related and has demanded that all of their opinions be voted into law.

Fuck 'em.

7. Gandhi would have agreed -

All compromise is based on give and take, but there can be no give and take on fundamentals. All compromise on fundamentals is a surrender, for it is all give and no take.” Mahatma Gandhi

9. Zero votes to NRA funded politicians

That will remove the NRA's power in politics.
Their money is toxic.

14. Since when is everyone so open about the necessity to compromise for

the sake of the NRA. So the representatives of the people are not even brought into the conversation anymore.

20. I noticed this morning that the NRA only has 5 Million members

I know the gun companies support them, but at $40 a year dues where is the flood of money coming from? The companies that give members huge discounts?

They spent 21 Million On Trump and $19 Million against Hillary!

Where is all that money coming from?

Is that one of the things that make you go,”Hmmm?”

22. The NRA's main power comes not from members or

from donations to politicians (new donors have tried displacing NRA money to little effect), but rather from the many millions of people passionately opposed to gun control. The NRA can direct that passion to elect a politician or to destroy him.

And of course the NRA (and very wealthy powers allied with the NRA--$$$$$) is always working to keep that source of its great power well fueled and burning.

24. It's widely believed Russia has donated to the NRA.

Their relationship goes back at least as far as 2011, and Russian pro-gun bots are currently flooding Twitter.

From Vox:
The FBI is investigating whether a top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin [Alexander Torshin] illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter have told McClatchy.
The NRA admits to spending a huge $30M to help elect Trump, but it may be more like $70M. Where'd that money come from?

And an article just last week from CNBC is titled "NRA, Russia and Trump: How 'dark money' is poisoning American democracy."

We're living through fascinating times. Who could have imagined in 1980 that the NRA and millions of rabidly anti-Russia Bircher-type supporters would come to see Russia as their wise and benevolent friend and their own government as their huge enemy?

Happily, these are also becoming very bad times for the NRA. May take a while yet, but it looks like their self-destructive extremism is nearing its end. it's hard to see how they will survive as a political power.

26. :) Our nation needs a Scopes trial effect and a breather

from all this off-the-leash extremism. I know I'm more than ready for one.

Those types, right and left, will always be with us, and we only prosper and progress when the far larger more moderate blocs are able to unite to keep extremism in check.

The NRA may have served a purpose at one time, but their cause has been bastardized into supporting the most outlandish kooky ideas ever.
