Until the footage of the aftermath of events like Sandy Hook and Pulse are shown live on TV

Nothing is going to change.

Nothing.

18 school shooting events since the start of the year.

EIGHTEEN.

There were a lot of things that changed how Vietnam went. One of the biggest pieces was it being brought into our living rooms.

Until those responsible, and those enabling, and those numb to it, have it shoved in their faces like a dog being shown that it shit in the house, nothing will change.

We, as a nation, must be SHAMED and SHAMED LOUDLY over this.

1. The Media Will Never Do This

If they showed the carnage, it would bring about a whole different narrative.

Otherwise, they're merely numbers.

They should have shown video of all the bodies in Las Vegas at the music festival. But the media does not have the guts, and the police officials obviously won't allow it.

3. Yup. We're beyond numb to it at this point because it is so common.

But the thing we miss is that full visual understand.

Can you imagine the investigators going through Sandy Hook and what they had to see? We've had some text descriptions, but if it was shown at the same time to the nation, it'd be that psychological kick in the ass to finally be properly ashamed of what we allow and to change it.

It really does need to be put out there exactly like we saw in Vietnam during the 60's in terms of coverage.

4. A judge recently ordered it all released

Metro has a month to comply. Body cam footage, hotel security feeds, crime scene photos, the works.

Metro said they couldn’t do it because “it’s an open investigation” and the judge essentially said “bullshit, the guy is dead.” And he literally said “the public has a right to know.”

7. There are videos on the ground in Vegas.

On particularly dark one where a guy walks around looking at the dead bodies. Quite unsettling and disturbing. Wouldn't seek it out because you won't sleep at night after watching it.

14. Perversely, I'm sure the media would LOVE to show the carnage.

Their ratings would skyrocket despite the outcry. "If it bleeds, it leads."

2. +1

Not to mention the church in Texas where every single person was shot and most were killed, or (as I ranted in another thread) Las Vegas where 58 were killed and 500 wounded — comparable to the casualties the 82nd Airborne took on D-Day.

The news won’t show anything that might disturb their corporate masters. Nothing too disturbing, and then not for very long, because there’ll be another mass shooting next week.

5. Yep, and it should be done in the immediate aftermath.

No waiting.

8. I believe they should show bodies, but not faces.

People need to comprehend the carnage and the losses experienced by parents, siblings, friends, etc. they show it from abroad. Why is the U.S. violence given a pass?

9. Sounds good but I don't think it would matter

Look at what passes for entertainment. We have become immune to the consequences of violence. Yes, the footage from Vietnam changed how people felt about the war. It also changed what was considered appropriate to show. Have you played Grand Theft Auto? And that's not even close to the worst out there or what about movies like Chain Saw Massacre? We have a culture that glorifies violence then arms people to the teeth. What could possibly go wrong?

17. I remember reading an account from Noah Posner's mother.

According to her, his entire lower jaw was "blown away." His left hand was gone. His body took 11 bullets.,

Fuck guns. Fuck bullets. Fuck our politicians for refusing to protect us from gun slaughter.

11. Not even that will bring change

The rabid gun humpers, could watch stuff like this all day long and it still wouldn't change their minds...you assume that all of those people have a conscious!

Scalise got shot and he didn't change his mind...because to him the money is what's most important...even if he had died, his fellow Republicans wouldn't have changed anything and would have convinced his family to take a stipend for their undying support for the 2nd Amendment!

12. The aftermath is in the broken hearts of families devastated by senseless, preventable violence

Not sure how you show on TV the life-altering fears of thousands of students afraid to go out in public.

13. Graphic pictures of dead, innocent children might do it.

It would need to be made public in a timely manner tho'.

Don't know how that could happen...

16. Thanks. I hate self-kicking...

They're showing more footage from within as recorded by kids, mostly from when they either heard shots or were being herded out by police. But that's not what's needed (it doesn't hurt though; Morning Joe's segment had Heileman I think it was talking about how that was what cameras recorded back on 9/11 with how people felt like this were happening, making it clear that this felt like a warzone).

18. Yeah, I saw that one video.

It was horrific, but not the needed effect.

Of course they would say "We can't show the shooter video because it would give other people ideas."

Or "We can't show the aftermath because it would hurt the victims families."

19. Yup, that video was like any number of other things in that it won't really make a difference

We, as a nation, need to be shaken and shamed into action to override the cowardice of others.
