I discovered how easy it is to fall into a bubble.

I happened to watch a YouTube video that turned out, after a few minutes, to be a bunch of right-wing drivel, so I stopped it and moved on to something else. Since then every time I go to YouTube I get bunches and bunches of "Recommended for you" videos that are all right wing garbage. I can see how somebody who actually wanted to watch that crap could be sucked into a bubble and totally insulated from reality.

Thanks, YouTube. Just because somebody stumbles onto a single piece of crap video doesn't mean they want to watch a lot more piece of crap videos.

As well as cat, puppy and baby videos, Lenard Cohen old photographs, Sea creatures and Khan Academy. I think I confuse their algorithm so they donít recommended that crap to me. Or, they havenít yet.

3. Wow. We know now that repetition tends to mold memory

much the way sitting most of the time molds skeletal bones.

8. You highlight a problem with the algorithms feeding us our news

It is harder to learn what is happening in this country and this world when all the news feeds we receive just creates an echo chamber of stories and topics similar to what we have previously consumed. I do not want my news tailor made for my interests. I want it broad and unfiltered. Unless something changes soon, those days are long gone.

10. try this........

GO here:

https://www.youtube.com/feed/history

and click on "clear watch history"

that should wipe out the list of videos you have watched and prevent youtube from making recommendations based on that list (which is why its offering you GOP shit)

11. You can go on your You Tube and click on the down arrow.

You can say you donít want to see that type of video. Not interested. Or not relevant. Something like that. It helps cut down in the amount of stuff you'd rather not see. That applies to Radical junk or any other video that you would rather not see.

I was not specific because I was not positive exactly which place you click. But just look on You Tube and you will find what I am talking about. Iíve done it for dumb videos and also when my husband has done searches for repairs to our RV and that type of video kept popping up on my feed. It took me a while to figure out why I was suddenly getting videos on fixing the roof of our camper and what to do to make them go away!

I agree with you that a person who stumbles on these vile videos can easily get exposed to many, many more with no effort.

15. I will down vote a few videos

I haven't had problems with right wing stuff, but I get annoying make-up videos in my feed. I will watch a make-up video to see a product review, pretty soon I'm getting videos on how-to-do drag queen make-up, (once you watch one out of curiosity, they do not stop) or crackpot, awful make-up up advice.

18. Not to mention that some of them turn into a black hole.

You click on one just out of curiosity and 3 hours later you look up and realize it is dark outside. LOL. Sometimes they suck you in and the undertow is powerful. LOL. I watched a young man who is a drag Queen and he was applying his makeup. It was mesmerizing. The level of skill it took to turn himself into a woman was remarkable with the shading and contouring it took. I usually try not to look at them just because they are kind of addicting. They should have a disclaimer on the first frame that warns you they are addictive. 😉

13. Avoid make-up/beauty tutorials and "TV advertisements from xx decade"

Gosh, you watch a few make-up tutorials and YouTube keeps pushing them.

If you watch a video such as "TV ads from the 50s" or anything like it, YouTube will push all sorts of TV nostalgia. (TV opening credits, TV shows that bombed) I just quit watching those types of videos.

The make-up stuff is different because you can actually learn something. If I'm planning to buy a new product, I will often watch several YouTube video reviews of the product. Then, I pay dearly with a bombardment of crazy crack pot beauty advice videos.

17. That's a fact

I find after being in this room for very long (an hour) it's good to take a break as well. If all it is is cliche mentality....are we really getting good editorialization and commentary? Makes you wonder. Computers....life before them was a hell of a lot more simple. Grief.
TMI often. Youtube is fun...but...wow...you can go down the rabbit hole quick. When the above happens I search a bunch of cool stuff to push back on my recommended feed. We need to educate people bc its not going to change in the foreseeable future. Dumbing down America is the goal for the right wing. And it's working.
