Just heard on Parkland Scanner that a Nicholas Cruz has been detained.

Regarding the school shooting. Though it could just be detaining a suspect not proof it's the shooter.

5. Wow! Most towns and counties in NJ went to secured radio, so criminals could not use scanners.

Pretty much here, if you use one, you just get people who think they bought secure frequency-hopping cordless home phones, when in reality many phones transmit a side band in clear text just in case their phone's encryption fails--this way, it doesn't drop the call. Even though those phones are rated for a hundred feet to a hundred yards, a 3 foot boom mast antenna attached to the scanner will pick the base units up over a mile away, giving the scanner people a one-mile radius of home phones to listen in on. Most scanners, post 1990ish are made to not pick up cell phone frequencies, but some can be modded, or you buy an old Bearcat at the farmer's market. I gave mine away after the state, counties and towns went to a secured encrypted network, about 15-20 years ago.

Criminals would use scanners to keep dibs on the police when doing their activities.
